History

In the wake of Avatar Kuruk's death and the failure to identify the next Avatar, the inner provinces of the Earth Kingdom descended into instability as daofei outlaws ran unchecked.[1] Upon seeing the damage and death Xu Ping An and the Yellow Necks inflicted on one such region in the central Earth Kingdom and learning that the Earth King would not send reinforcements from his army to help,[1] Jianzhu took it upon himself to stop the Yellow Neck Uprising.[2] He confronted the daofei at Zhulu Pass in 304 BG, where he incapacitated Xu Ping An, dispatched the earthbending daofei, and terrorized the 5,000 remaining nonbending daofei into digging their own graves before sweeping the soil over their heads with earthbending to bury them alive.[3][4] Official records called this event the Battle of Zhulu Pass and listed Xu Ping An among the dead.[5] Its mass murder also earned Jianzhu the nickname "Gravedigger" or "Butcher" of Zhulu Pass among the daofei.[2][6]

Layout and description

The pass is a region in the interior Earth Kingdom large enough to fit thousands of people and with soil soft enough to dig through without a shovel. The ground beneath the pass contains the remains of about 5,000 Yellow Necks who died during the Battle of Zhulu Pass, though some Earth Kingdom citizens, such as Yun, believed the area contained the bodies of villagers Jianzhu found cut down by rebels and proceeded to piously inter.[2][4]
