Yong was a captain in the military of the Earth Kingdom who led the Anti-Corruption Task Force in Ba Sing Se during the absence of Avatar Kyoshi.

History

Yong had a turn of fortune when he went from being an unremarkable soldier in the Earth Kingdom military to unit captain of the Anti-Corruption Task Force. After so many years of obscurity and drudgery, Yong saw his new job as an opportunity to make a name for himself. Earth King Yi Ming gave him a carte blanche to deal with the daofei after Avatar Kyoshi left the city to deal with issues elsewhere, and he rose in prominence. His methods were chaotic and the results had yet to genuinely pay off, but the spectacle was enough to keep the Earth King and his ministers appeased.[2]

When the children of Ambassador Quin were kidnapped, Yong dispatched his deputies when they identified an ex-daofei named Mengyao as the likely culprit. However, Yong stalled the direct search for the children, and instead arrested as many daofei in the Lower Ring as he could, even those who had no connection to the crime. Yong personally cared little if the children were found. He hoped that one daofei group would eventually just confess to the crime, and that he could earn an accolade for himself as a result.[3][1]

While the government was satisfied at first, the Earth King began to put pressure on Yong and the task force to find the children before the Fire Nation military did, after Ambassador Quin dispatched her personal guard. The king was determined to prove that the Earth Kingdom could handle its own criminals.[4]

Personality

Yong was a very proud individual and was eager to make a name for himself. His methods as unit captain were often chaotic, but he succeeded in often creating a spectacle that worked for long enough to keep the Earth King and his ministers appeased.[2]

Abilities

Yong was a skilled earthbender and the most senior earthbender in the entire task force, though the task force in general lacked the elite skill of organizations such as the Fire Army.[2]

Trivia

  • Captain Yong shares his name with the younger brother of Hua, an ex-slave of the Fifth Nation. However, it is unknown whether the captain and Hua's brother are the same person.[5]
