Yasuko Sato[5] was the wife of Hiroshi Sato and the mother of Asami. A successful architect,[4] she was killed by a member of the Agni Kai Triad during a break-in and robbery at the Sato estate.[1]

History

Yasuko was a successful architect who designed skyscrapers in Republic City, including Future Industries' school of engineering.[4] She met and married Hiroshi Sato, and in 152 AG she gave birth to their daughter, Asami.[1][6]

Asami was interested in Yasuko's projects growing up, and came into her office as she was working on blueprints for a new skyscraper. She surprised her daughter when she told her one didn't have to be a bender to build a skyscraper, and educated her on the process, and had Asami make her a model skyscraper with a small scale model of notecards. She told her daughter that she was building Future Industries' new school of engineering, and happily encouraged her daughter's aspiration when she told Yasuko that she wanted to attend the school - though noted that it would be some time before she could study engineering.[4]

Yasuko would also design the headquarters of Future Industries to be built in downtown Republic City. The design would be considered a masterpiece of innovation and artistry.[7]

When Asami was six years old, the Agni Kai Triad raided the Sato estate, and Yasuko lost her life during the break in at the hands of one of the members.[1]

Legacy

Yasuko's death became the primary factor in manifesting Hiroshi's deep hatred toward all benders, eventually causing him to join the Equalists to avenge her death.[1] Asami countered by pointing out that Yasuko would be horrified to see what her husband had become despite his assurance that he was avenging his wife and was convinced that his love for Yasuko had been corrupted by hatred to the extent that he no longer felt it.[3]

The company headquarters that Yasuko designed was also built exactly to her specifications by Hiroshi. The skyscraper was named the Yasuko Sato Building in her honor. Yasuko's brilliant designs allowed the building to weather the cataclysms of the 170s AG and spirit vine proliferation better than any other structure downtown.[7]

Trivia

  • Yasuko shares a similar past to Kya, the mother of Katara and Sokka.
    • Both women were killed by firebenders that entered their homes, albeit for different reasons, when their children were very young.
    • The death of each woman caused their respective spouse to take action, with Hiroshi joining Amon and Hakoda leading the Southern Water Tribe to fight in the Hundred Year War.
