They are known to pride themselves on their uncompromising satirical art.[1]
History
The troupe's uncompromising commitment to satire has made them unwelcome in more than a few municipalities, thanks to performances they have put on about local leaders and celebrities. One of their performances, Hou-Ting's Hat, was so cutting that they could not even find a venue to host them in all of Ba Sing Se. The troupe has won both fame and infamy all over the four nations, and they have quite a few contacts all around the world.
Each of their plays had messages of free speech woven into them by their director, Wahyu. He is strongly committed to his principles due to being the son of Fire Nation political activists who spent a portion of his childhood in jail for speaking out against Fire Lord Ozai.
However, the Wandering Mask Troupe found a good home in Republic City, setting up shows in Avatar Korra Park. The city's foundations in free speech and international celebration made it the perfect place for the troupe to grow some roots and continue to perfect their art. The troupe hosted two main shows, the first of which criticized President Zhu Li Moon's rise to power and her connections to corporations. This play is straightforward and somber, with clear criticism on her leadership. The troupe's second play, The Spirit and the Triad, alludes to the Triple Threat Triad, dealing heavily in symbolism and allegory, skating the line between metaphor and straightforward insults. However, ultimately, it is not very hard for viewers to figure out who the play is about.
Some scattered and angry Triple Threat Triad members started to scope out the play. Though the triad was still leaderless after Tokuga's insurrection, the rank-and-file members decided to shut down the play for good after learning it was about them. The troupe started to see these triad members as cloaked figures, who started watching their plays from afar. The first time the visitors showed up coincided with a visit from Bolin, who wanted to see the play on Zhu Li as her personal aide. While the earthbender did not agree with everything that was said, he deemed the show harmless and left, but then, the figures started showing up, and people attending the performances began to report muggings and harassment on their way home.
While nobody had seen the faces of the cloaked attackers, word started getting around that the park was unsafe for visitors. Wahyu knew that something was amiss, but did not identify the Triple Threat Triad itself as the culprits. Since there was no retaliation from the troupe, the Triple Threats believed they had an easy target on their hands, and were eager to prove their own ferocity once more. The triad planned to attack the show and make the Wandering Mask Troupe pay for their insolence.[1]
