Thaki was a Jasmine Island protector during the 100s AG. Alongside his team, he became entangled in Jasmine Island's political crisis of the time, investigating a major theft and the activities of Xai Bau, the eventual founder of the Red Lotus. Thaki was also a member of the Antiquarians, a traditionalist and isolationist faction on the island.

History

When Thaki was still a child, Jasmine Island was invaded by the Fire Nation military under Admiral Yueya, an event later dubbed "The Devastation". Though the invasion was ultimately unsuccessful, it caused great suffering and destruction. The homes of Thaki's family were set on fire, and the young boy managed to use his waterbending to save the apartment building of his younger cousin Jia, but could not prevent the destruction of his own house.[1] Thaki felt responsible for being unable to save more homes during the invasion, and would blame himself for years. He also became the ward of Jia until she was old enough to care for herself.[1][2]

After coming of age, Thaki joined the Jasmine Island protectors, the island's security forces and main law enforcement agency. Honing his waterbending, he became one of the protectors' main firefighters.[1] Regardless, he could not let go of his lingering feelings of guilt, and continued his attempts to keep others safe, including Jia.[1][2] In the 100s AG, Jasmine Island entered a phase of political turmoil, with various factions emerging to influence the country's trajectory. Thaki began attending meetings of one group, the Antiquarians,[1] who advocated strict isolationism and traditionalism in order to protect Jasmine Island from all outside threats.[3][4] Jia also joined the Antiquarians.[5]

The infighting among the political factions escalated into a full crisis when new elections for Jasmine Island's ruling council were announced.[3][4] The disputes on Jasmine Island worsened when missions of the Air Acolytes as well as the Order of the White Lotus, including Iroh and Piandao, arrived on the island. The order members were seeking Xai Bau, a renegade revolutionary who had allegedly become active on Jasmine Island.[3][6] Thaki's team, including Ganzaya, Kim Jin, Kosui, and Zo, was present to greet these arrivals.[6] Once the protectors had escorted the foreigners to the council hall, they learned that someone had stolen a bag of golden jasmine seeds from the yearly harvest, a symbolically potent and disruptive action.[6][7]

The protectors' leader, Wei, ordered Thaki's team to investigate the theft, reasoning that the group included members of various political factions and thus might be reasonably neutral.[2][7] The group thus visited the headquarters of the Autumn Leaves, Climbing Vines, Antiquarians, and Risen Wave, questioning and seeking clues.[7][7] The group eventually uncovered the thief's identity,[2][nb 1] and the influence of Xai Bau on the Autumn Leaves faction.[8] Furthermore, the investigation directly impacted the upcoming elections of the Jasmine Island council.[9]

Personality

Thaki often came across as harsh and suspicious, traits which stemmed from his deep feelings of guilt of his perceived failures during "The Devastation". Believing that he had to make up for this, he became overprotective to those he cared about.[1][2]

Abilities

A competent waterbender, Thaki specialized in generating powerful waves in combat which surged and crashed akin to the sea at a stormy beach.[1]
