Tengfei was a Fire Army deserter and pirate who captained the Renegade Phoenix, a ship that made up part of the Crimson Sails Armada, during the era of Avatar Aang. With a personal vendetta against the Fire Nation, Tengfei and her crew acted as the bloodiest and cruelest pirate fleet.
History
Tengfei grew up in a military family in the Fire Nation and went into service when she came of age. However, she was injured in the Hundred Year War while putting down a rebellion in the Earth Kingdom, and was sent home a broken woman. She spent years of her life nursing herself back to health, with no help from the military, who did not care about one of their lost soldiers.
Eventually, Tengfei was well enough to rejoin the army, but instead she was angry. She thought that joining the military would be like joining an extension of her family, but wanted no part of it if what happened to her was really how the military treated its children. She lost herself in anger for a few years until the crew of the Renegade Phoenix recruited her for her technological skills. With her new adopted family, she managed to regain her sense of composure and make something of her life, even if it was a life of piracy. When the old captain of the Renegade Phoenix passed away, Tengfei was voted in as the new captain.[1]
Under her leadership, the Renegade Phoenix became terrifying legends as the bloodiest and cruelest pirate fleet of the Crimson Sails Armada.[2]
Tengfei used to have a close working relationship with Captain Duga of the Burning Wave, and some even said the two were in love. However, the relationship soured when Duga left Tengfei stranded on a mission when she was captured by Fire Nation soldiers.[1][3] She earned a nasty scar running from her left eye all the way down to her mouth from her desperate escape.[1] The crew of the Renegade Phoenix came to see those of the Burning Wave as weak, greedy merchants after the event.[2]
When Fire Lord Ozai struck a deal with the pirates, the crew found themselves at a loss with what to do.[2] Many of the crew spent so long being a thorn in the side of the military that they never considered what life would loo like when the fight was over.[1]
However, when High Captain Ningka took control of the island and declared open season on the Fire Nation, Tengfei began to feel reinvigorated from her rather boring retirement, and the crew was ecstatic with a newly regained sense of purpose. She was a vocal supporter of the new leader of the Crimson Sails Armada.[3][2] This also exacerbated the constant clashes the Renegade Phoenix had with the Burning Wave.[2] Tengfei happily encouraged the antagonistic behavior in hopes that Duga would slip up, lose control for just a little bit, and break the rules Ningka set out for the two crews, meaning that Tengfei would have no choice but to respond and get her revenge on Duga.[1]
Personality
Tengfei viewed herself as the caretaker of the ship, and believed that the Renegade Phoenix was not so much a crew but a big, dysfunctional family. Knowing that each member of the crew had their own vice, she did her best to redirect them to more productive pursuits, like knocking a few heads together.[1]
Abilities
Tengfei was chosen as captain of the Renegade Phoenix due to her technological skills. In a fight, Tengfei relied on her fast movement to keep her out of the worst of harm's way. She could also manage to absorb a blow during a fight, allowing to ready herself to act immediately after.[1]
