Tei Eesoni was a famous inventor during the late 4th and early 3rd century BG. In her later years, she became involved in a crisis surrounding Jasmine Island, a small island-state.

History

A scatterbrained but extremely accomplished researcher, Tei rose to great prominence in the Fire Nation during her lifetime.[2][3] Even though many of her inventions had the tendency to explode, the Fire Nation's government recognized her worth, sponsored her projects, and even provide her with access to military vessels so that she could test inventions far away from settled areas.[1] As a result of her extraordinary skills, she was considered "invaluable to the Fire Nation".[3] She also became a good friend of Hei-Ran.[2]

By the late 290s BG, she was "elderly" but still sought new inspirations and chances for scientific progress. Tei was transported on a large Fire Nation warship during one outing, only for the vessel to be ambushed and captured by a Fifth Nation pirate fleet under Tagaka and Erchtei. The inventor was thus kidnapped by the corsairs, but the criminals were unaware of her true worth as a hostage. Believing her an "engineer", they just put her to work at maintaining the captured warship's engines so that they could deploy it as part of their fleet. Unfazed by her situation, Tei opted to continue her research even among the pirates.[2]

The Fifth Nation leadership was alarmed by Tei's abduction, and organized a rescue mission under Hei-Ran.[2] Meanwhile, the Fifth Nation fleet launched a major raid against the small, independent Jasmine Island. Hei-Ran's force intervened in the clash, and together the local protectors as well as Hei-Ran's strike force rescued Tei.[3]

After being rescued, Tei unexpectedly declared that she intended to stay on Jasmine Island, as she had taken a "shine" to the area and its people. This caused an argument, as Hei-Ran did not wish to disrespect her friend's wishes, yet had vowed to bring her back to the Fire Nation due to her worth as a national asset.[2][4][5]

Personality

Tei Eesoni was "equal parts brilliant and out of touch with reality",[2] generally appearing laid-back[2][4] and eclectic.[3] Often solely focused on her research, she generally ignored the potential political fallout of her decisions and actions.[4][3] When kidnapped by the Fifth Nation, she was unperturbed and largely followed their orders, though continued her research and often demanded tea from her guards.[2] Despite her eccentric tendencies, Tei was also a "people person" who easily made friends and was fascinated by the experiences of other individuals.[6]

Abilities

As a brilliant inventor, Tei was responsible for a great number of successful mechanical inventions. However, she was often dissatisfied with her projects, constantly seeking to invent something which did "genuine good".[1]
