History
The Air Nomads settled in the Taihua Mountains before the four nations were fully formed, building the Northern Air Temple.[4][5] The famous philosopher and guru Laghima eventually began living alone on one of the Taihua Mountains, a height later named "Laghima's Peak" in his honor.[5] The dangerous mountains reportedly also swallowed entire armies as they were trying to attack Ba Sing Se during the Earth Kingdom's unification wars.[1]
In year 17 of the era of Yangchen, the combustionbenders Xiaoyun, Yingsu, and Thapa were imprisoned at old Air Nomad hermitages in the Taihua Mountains. As requested by Avatar Yangchen, airbenders of the Northern Air Temple guarded them.[3][6] Half a year later,[7] the air temple and the hermitages were raided by Chaisee's agents. The raid and the resulting clashes caused great damage in the wider area and at least one major landslide.[7][8]
Following the brutal end of the Yellow Neck Uprising in 305 BG, the mountain range was home to some of the few remaining daofei strongholds in the world. The Flying Opera Company flew over the mountains on Pengpeng as they made their way to Hujiang.[1] The outlaw town was later abandoned after a shirshu managed to track Kyoshi to the mountains.[9]
Jianzhu and Saiful reached the southern foothills of the Taihua range on eel hounds in the former's effort to track down the Avatar. The pair discovered Hujiang abandoned, and Saiful betrayed his master by sending information to Hui via dragon hawk.[10] The information that the Avatar had been lost in Taihua would be fundamental to Hui gathering a conclave of Earth Sages and attempting to remove Jianzhu as the Avatar's guardian.[11]
Geography
The Taihua Mountains are said to be treacherous beyond measure, and were home to howling blizzards that could freeze a traveler's feet to the ground. Approximately once per decade, the winds would shift, carrying red dust from the Si Wong Desert to the peaks of the Taihua Mountains and turning the snow blood red.[1]
The mountains have a diverse climate, ranging from temperate and boreal in the area around the Northern Air Temple[12][13] to more warmer sections in the southern Taihua Mountains.[1] While many of the mountain valleys and smaller mountains are covered in coniferous forest,[12][13] other sections are arid and almost free of any vegetation.[12][14] Many of the higher mountain peaks are permanently covered in snow.[1][13]
