"Sulan's Smile. The late Lord Chaeryu might have commissioned it for his wife's personal use before the two of them passed. It looked barely used."

— Kyoshi's thoughts.[1]

Sulan's Smile was a pleasure craft that Fire Lord Chaeryu commissioned and named for his wife, Lady Sulan. In 295 BG, the ship was arranged to transport Avatar Kyoshi out of the Fire Nation after the conclusion of the Camellia-Peony War.[1]

History

Fire Lord Chaeryu commissioned the ship in the late 4th century BG for the personal use of his wife before her death, though the ship appeared hardly used by 295 BG.[1]

After Avatar Kyoshi wanted to speak to Kuruk after the end of the Camellia-Peony War, she arranged for a palace minister to provide her transport alone, not wanting to disappoint her secretary Jinpa with another half-baked plan. At the docks in First Lord's Harbor, Kyoshi found the craft waiting for her. As the Avatar boarded the ship, she ordered Captain Joonho and the crew to take her to a dark patch in the Mo Ce Sea. Kyoshi believed that sailing was proving to be a slow method of transport, but realized that as she was accustomed to traveling on flying bison, every other mode of transport would seem slow to her. She decided against helping the ship along with waterbending, as she did not consider herself well-trained enough in that bending art to do so.

Eventually, the ship reached the location that Kyoshi requested, and she ordered the crew to drop anchor and not to follow her under any circumstances. Though Joonho noted that there was nothing there, Kyoshi told him that, in fact, there had once been.[1] By delving into the water that had once been Yangchen's hallowed island, later destroyed by Kuruk, Kyoshi was able to cross over to the Spirit World and meet with her past life. Defying the Avatar's order, the crew swam to rescue the Avatar after her spirit returned to the physical world, with the ship's captain noting that he would not obey a clearly stupid order.[2]

One month later, Kyoshi made use of the pleasure craft to travel to Yokoya for her final confrontation with Yun.[3]
