He was the cultural consultant of the Avatar franchise's cultural influences and the de facto author of all translation and calligraphy for Avatar: The Last Airbender, The Legend of Korra and Avatar Legends: The Roleplaying Game.

Biographical information

Born in Hong Kong in 1943, Dr. Lee graduated from the Chinese University of Hong Kong with a B.Sc. in Biology in 1969, and received a Ph.D. in Biochemistry from Purdue University, USA, in 1974, after which he pursued a career in related fields.

After retiring, he turned to history and literature, started a website called Asiawind in 1995 to showcase Chinese calligraphy, and was contacted by Nickelodeon in 2005 to act as a cultural consultant and provide Chinese translation and calligraphy for Avatar: The Last Airbender. Seeing that the purpose of the story was to embrace multiculturalism, anti-violence, anti-racism and promote ethnic harmony, he agreed, initially thinking he would only do a few episodes. Later he went to California to talk to the producers and met "two very imaginative and creative young writers" - the co-creators of Avatar - and became even more enthusiastic about the idea. They worked together for a couple of years after that until the series ended.

A few years later, he was invited to work on The Legend of Korra, and was also involved in Avatar Legends: The Roleplaying Game.
