Saya was the owner and proprietor of the Fork in the Path Inn on Jasmine Island by the late Hundred Year War. Regarded as a good storyteller, she was a popular figure among locals. Saya played a leading civil role in the early 90s AG, when she organized emergency measures in response to a surprise Fire Nation invasion.

History

Saya was born on Jasmine Island and lost both her parents to sickness at an early age. She was subsequently communally raised by several families, developing a fondness for community and storytelling in the process. She later became the owner of the centrally placed Fork in the Path Inn;[1] this business had once prospered by attracting foreign merchants seeking a quiet place to stay away from the island's main settlements. However, it declined as trade dried up due to the Hundred Year War.[2] Overseeing the inn, Saya developed a reputation as one of the island's best storytellers, never closing her establishment and always offering a bit of free tea to needy travelers. Through her lively conversations and the hospitality of her inn, Saya felt that she could give back some of the kindness which the other islanders had shown her during her childhood.[1] The inn thus became popular among the region's townsfolk as a fine meeting spot.[2]

The lives of Saya and the other islanders were greatly disrupted in the early 90s AG, however, when Admiral Yueya of the Fire Nation Navy launched a surprise invasion of Jasmine Island. As the Fire Nation troops burned, plundered, and killed, many civilians fled their destroyed homes and the areas of heavy combat. Saya offered the Fork in the Path Inn as a refugee shelter during the chaos, telling the Jasmine Island protectors that they could bring fleeing civilians to her establishment.[3]
