Sakuru[nb 1] was a plucky journalist of the Republic News, one of the most popular newspapers in Republic City. She had an interest in writing about workers' rights and went so far as to pose as a factory worker in the Green Meadows district.[1]

History

Sakuru was a classically trained journalist. Her years of tireless work at Republic News allowed her to build a modest middle class life, and she built up several unused vacation days over the years.

Sakuru gained a particular interest in writing about economic inequality and abuses at factories toward the end of her career. She wrote a small article covering a union protest, but this ended with strike-breakers swinging batons. As she reached just a year from retirement, she planned a long-term investigation into the factories for the last big scoop of her career. However, her editor refused to sanction this. Sakuru was aware that her earlier story had resulted in problems, but she also believed that her editor was worried about the reprisals of large companies.

As a result of the initial rejection, Sakuru chose to instead use up her saved vacation days to pose as a factory worker. Although she was considerably older than someone entering that line of work, her cover story was that she was a refugee from the Earth Kingdom who had escaped the unrest that had ensued following Earth Queen Hou-Ting's death. She sorted her way into the job on the factory line and started to ask probing questions on the workroom floor. However, this resulted in more than a few of the floor supervisors harboring suspicions about her motives.[1] She eventually uncovered intel that a factory or two had infiltrated the Green Meadows Union, the new organization advocating for all the district's workers. However, she could not directly go to the union for help, and had to keep her identity a secret so that she could uncover the sort of information that lay beyond her reach, locked in the offices of various forepeople. In particular, she was looking for evidence that showed how factory workers had cut corners on safety.[2]

Sakuru's claim that she could put pressure on the factories if she had access to documentation was heard by Tea Brand Tung, a member of the Burning Coals - a group of hired muscle that the blue-collar workers could turn to. This led to Tea Brand Tung suggesting to the union's leader, Hou Yin, that she and her allies break in and steal information for Sakuru. Neither Sakuru or Hou Yin wanted such an attack to take place, however, and both parties looked for help to defuse the situation and stop Tea Brand Tung from causing excessive damage to the district.[2]
