Royal armor is an accessory worn by the members of the Fire Nation Royal Family. Fire Lord Zoryu, Princess Azula and Prince Zuko wore royal armor several times in their lives for both journeys and gatherings.[1][2]
History
Shoulder pads of the armor were adorned by Fire Lord Zoryu over his robes when he first met Avatar Kyoshi at a boastful reception he had prepared for her near the end of the Camellia-Peony War.[1]
Zuko and Azula also wore it primarily for public appearances, but it was common for them to wear it during ceremonies, war meetings, and audiences with Fire Lord Ozai.[2] However, it also served a practical purpose, as Azula was wearing the armor while battling Aang, Toph, and Sokka during the Day of Black Sun[3] and while visiting the Boiling Rock.[4] Azula was wearing the armor during her coronation as Fire Lord and during the comet-enhanced Agni Kai against Zuko.[5][6]
Design
Royal armor is elaborately designed; colored primarily in black, the outfit follows typical Fire Nation style, with scarlet detailing and fine golden tracing. Worn over the chest of the Fire Lord, the prince and princess, the royal armor extends across the shoulders with sturdy pieces and down to the top of the stomach. The Fire Nation insignia is visible on the front directly beneath the neck area on the chest and its shade is reserved for the Fire Lord and their immediate family.[2][7]
Trivia
- Chaejin, Zoryu's older half-brother, wore gold and black robes cut to resemble royal armor, along with a gold brocade which was the shade of the Fire Nation insignia in an attempt to mock the Fire Lord and show that he would inevitably become one at the conclusion of the Camellia-Peony War.[7]
- The statue of Fire Lord Zuko at the Central City Station in Republic City portrays him wearing his royal armor.[8]
- During his banishment, Zuko wore similar armor with a black and red color scheme, rather than black and gold.
