It educates elite boys, particularly firebenders.[2]
History
In 72 BG, a ten-year-old Prince Sozin enrolled at the Academy along with his friends, the twins Yasu and Roku. The trio's experience living together led Sozin and Yasu grow closer to one another, with Roku starting to feel left behind.
Two years later, Sozin was put on lockdown after incinerating some of the school's centuries-old tapestries. With the prince grounded, Yasu and Roku snuck out to the beach together to see the bioluminescent algae. As the boys swam to reach the sandbar, they were struck by a powerful wave, and Yasu was lost to the sea.[2]
After Yasu's funeral, Roku and Sozin both moved out of the dorms and went on leave for the remainder of the term. Sozin refused to return to his studies even after Fire Lord Taiso commanded him to do so.[3] The two friends eventually returned to school and completing their studies before they turned sixteen.[1] Sozin graduated as the most accomplished firebender in his class, with Roku coming second.[4] Shortly after, Roku would learn that he was the Avatar.[1][5]
Curriculum
The school educates hundreds of students, the majority of them being firebenders.[2] Much like its all-girls counterpart, most elite nonbender boys are expected to proceed directly to university instead of studying at the Academy.[6] It is not uncommon for new boys to join the academy around the age of ten for their first year.[2]
Firebenders learn important foundational skills for combat as soon as they arrive at the Academy. In their first week of their first year, students learn how to clear away fire with their own bending, either by dispersing flames or pushing them out of the way with their own.[7]
Boys are expected to board at the school's dormitories, and do not return home during the day, no matter how close their parents are. Nevertheless, it is appropriate for students to leave the premises to take part in cultural activities like the theater if they have permission.[2]
