Ria was the corrupt owner of Blue Skies Fisheries, a business crucial to the economy of Linsho. After his profits took a turn for the worse following the Hundred Year War, he planned an arson attack in town in a plot to destroy his competition.[1]
History
Ria was born to an earthbender father and a Fire Nation colonist mother. While his mixed heritage was not uncommon in Linsho, Ria struggled to fit in with other children. As a result, he was relentlessly bullied for years. His experiences ended up shaping him as an adult, as he would take out the injustices against him on anyone who stood in his way.[2]
Ria and his blended family owned Blue Skies Fisheries, which had been established by the Fire Nation.[1] He disliked the "stench" of Linsho, and chose to live in a two-story mansion further inland. Ria also made use of a security detail of well-trained earthbenders. He paid them well, and saw the force as his pride and joy.[3] He was never seen without his team, and relied on them to both carry out immoral acts and to protect him from anyone who was angry at him. Nevertheless, he was still obstinate and rude to them, eroding their loyalty somewhat.[2]
After the Hundred Year War, many expected the Blue Skies Fisheries would be turned over to local Earth Kingdom citizens as part of the Harmony Restoration Movement. However, Ria managed to keep control of the business. This result led to divisions within the town's population, as most Earth Kingdom citizens still believing the fisheries should be given to the local community. At the same time, Fire Nation citizens and colonists came to see Ria's control of the business as a symbol of what their nation built after conquering Linsho.[1] Ria fed anti-Earth Kingdom rhetoric to the Loyalists, mostly hoping to keep their focus off him, as he also exploited workers of Fire Nation descent.[4]
Despite maintaining ownership of Blue Skies Fisheries, Ria began to see his profit margins narrow due to an increase in competition. He began to worry about debts catching up to him, and therefore hired an arsonist to destroy some of the other fisheries. He also instructed that one of Blue Skies Fisheries' dilapidated buildings be torched, in order to make himself look like one of the victims.[1]
The attack took place on the day of the Squid Ink Festival, just after Kallika, Gingko, Ziyi, Toklo, and Chihiro arrived in town. Just as Mayor Leaf announced the cancellation of the festival due to a storm, a Blue Skies Fisheries warehouse burst into flames. Ria made a scene about being shocked about the blatant attack on his property. A brawl shortly broke out when an Earth Kingdom Restorationist blamed a Fire Nation Loyalist for the incident, and each of the groups began to take their anger out on the other.[5]
Physical description
Ria was scrawny as a child, though he had grown out of this as an adult.[2]
Personality
As a child, Ria was very emotional, and also somewhat snobbish. This led to him failing to fit in with his peers.[2]
Later in life, Ria was ambitious, and was desperate to prove his worth through financial success. He wished to ensure the fisheries' income by any means necessary, and had no moral qualms about using arson to achieve his goals. If pressed on his greed, Ria would lie, manipulate, and bribe his way out of any discussion. He truly never believed anything bad would befall him for his actions. It was futile if anyone tried to morally hold Ria accountable. He was intimidated by any genuine threats to his fisheries, though he would try to beat any threats if he thought he could. He also became very irate when his property was threatened.[2]
Abilities
Ria was competent in a fight, being able to forcefully strike his opponents. He was also adept at assessing his enemies' weaknesses and vulnerabilities.[2]
