As a territory of the Air Nomads, the mountains are known for housing the Southern Air Temple, which is situated at the center of the range.[1]
History
After the Air Nomad Genocide, a mysterious martial artist set up a dojo in the Patola Mountains, hidden from the Fire Nation. With the Fire Nation having raided the inhabitants of the archipelago for their crops, the master taught the locals how to defend themselves in exchange for food, with another condition being that no one would ask them about their past.[2]

In the late stages of the Hundred Year War, Team Avatar passed through the Patola Mountain Range on their way to the Southern Air Temple. They met Xin Ming, a student of the hidden dojo who explained that all the food was locked in the building, and the students had splintered into three factions. After defeating the three sects, Aang, Katara, and Sokka went on to confront the master[2] before moving on to the Southern Air Temple.[3]
Later, the area's dojo was visited by a group of challengers who also engaged the students and the master in a series of duels.[2]
Geography

The mountains feature high, steep peaks with angular edges so massive it was once believed the only way to reach the top was by flying bison.[3] Though some small areas around the temple were landscaped or used for agricultural purposes, the Air Nomads on the whole maintained a vast majority of the natural landscape in accordance with their traditions. Nevertheless, there is little native vegetation due to the high altitude of the mountain range. Plants found in this location include grasses, scrub bushes, deciduous trees, small yellow wildflowers, and several varieties of fruit trees planted by the Air Nomads. A mountain passage is located south of the air temple, inhabited by people of unknown heritage.[2]

Trivia
- The word "Patola" bears close resemblance to the word "Potala", the name of a palace in the Tibet Autonomous Region which served as the main residence of the Dalai Lama until the mid 20th century.
