Aang is the last surviving Air Nomad and airbender. As the Avatar, he is also the only person in the world who is capable of manipulating all four elements. An airbending prodigy, Aang struggles to deal with the burden of his duties while still holding on to his adventurous and playful nature.[1]
History
As a kid, Aang had a close relationship with Monk Gyatso, who acted as the young airbender's guardian, father figure, and best friend.[3]
A hundred years after the Air Nomad genocide, Aang reawakened to a world ravaged by war. After being found in an iceberg by Sokka and Katara, he embarked on a quest with them to take his rightful place as the next Avatar. When they travel to the Southern Air Temple, Aang's home, the team witnesses the devastation left by the Fire Nation, and the airbender begins to realize that this is the result of him not fulfilling his responsibilities as the Avatar.[4][5]
