Mosi was a pirate, rebel, and the leader of the Dancing Nobleman Fleet, a faction of the Crimson Sails Armada. A skilled naval commander, he rose from poverty to head of a large fleet by the end of the Hundred Year War. Something of a social revolutionary, Mosi long fought against the Fire Nation and regarded his fleet as a sanctuary for freethinkers who valued liberty and sought a prosperous existence.
Following the Great War, Mosi was drawn into the crisis surrounding the Crimson Sails Armada, as the pirate alliance fell under the command of Ningka and waged a campaign against Zuko's government. As Mosi considered Zuko a much better Fire Lord than the previous Fire Nation rulers and disapproved of Ningka's ousting of his friend Kangana from the pirate fleet, he worked to undermine the Crimson Sails Armada's new direction.
History
Mosi was born into a poor family in a Fire Nation colony in the Earth Kingdom during the Hundred Year War. From his youth, he had to help his family with dangerous work just to have enough food to eat, and quickly became resentful as he realized that most of the profits were always diverted to the Fire Nation. Eventually, this anger boiled over and he took to the seas, becoming a pirate in order to hurt the nation which had exploited his family.[1]
He proved to be a talented corsair and leader, gradually rallying a group of corsairs under his banner who shared his love for freedom and a good life. His skill for naval combat allowed his initially small collection of ramshackle pirate boats to overcome far stronger enemies, further cementing his reputation and transforming his force into a proper navy: The Dancing Nobleman Fleet. This name was rumoured to have arisen from one incident in which Mosi made a nobleman dance to save his life.[1] Despite his growing influence, Mosi maintained a lighthanded leadership style, allowing the member ships of his fleet to largely operate as they wished, as long as they remained loyal to their comrades. Thus, the fleet always operated as a rather discordant force, a fact in which Mosi took some pride.[1][2]
Mosi and his fleet eventually joined a larger pirate alliance, the Crimson Sails Armada, while continuing their private war against the Fire Nation under Azulon. Despite resenting the Fire Nation, however, Mosi had no issue with its people. At one point he even fell in love with a firebender, Sayako. The two married and adopted a daughter, Lilly.[1]
Though the Crimson Sails Armada's Head Captain, Kangana, disapproved of Mosi's chaotic leadership style, the two developed grudging respect for each other and eventually became friends. As a result, Mosi also accepted the Crimson Sails Armada's deal with Fire Lord Ozai in 95 AG, using the new peace to build a happy home life with Sayako and Lilly on Crimson Sails island. The situation changed with the end of the Hundred Year War, as the pirate alliance fell into a crisis and Kangana was ousted and exiled by Ningka. The latter was a highly aggressive and bloodthirsty leader, and ordered the Crimson Sails Armada to launch a vicious piracy campaign against the Fire Nation. Before long, some freethinking Dancing Nobleman Fleet members began to clash with Ningka, though Mosi was able to shield them from her wrath. Mosi also disapproved of Ningka's commands, believing that the Fire Nation under Zuko was changing for the better, and resenting Ningka for expelling Kangana from the fleet.[1] Thus, Mosi publicly maintained his loyalty to Ningka's new leadership upon his desire to keep the island's independence, even as he was waiting for an opportunity to reinstate Kangana as the Head Captain.[2]
Personality
Mosi was charismatic and a smooth talker who greatly valued liberty. A skilled and well-liked leader, he wanted to forge a community in the Dancing Nobleman Fleet which did not stifle its members. Accordingly, he took pride in the diverse and often chaotic nature of his navy, seeing its constant disputes as an asset. Accordingly, negotiating conflicts in the fleet usually fell to Mosi's husband Sayako, as the leader would let his followers solve their own problems. However, Mosi felt protective of the Dancing Nobleman Fleet when it was threatened by outsiders, helping his followers to escape the wrath of Ningka.[1]
Mosi also valued his family and friends, hating how Kangana was treated by the other pirates and Ningka in particular.[1]
