Maral was a businessman and developer based in Republic City. He operated as Best Ramen's franchisor in the city, and was a very controversial local figure for his part in opening a branch of his chain restaurant in a traditionalist part of the city: Old Cranefish Town.[1][2]

History

Maral was the son of a shipping magnate who made his money alongside the growth of Republic City. After becoming the franchisor of Best Ramen, a chain restaurant in the capital of the United Republic of Nations, Maral started to move in on Old Cranefish Town around the same time that other developers started to want to buy up and modernize properties in the district. However, Maral did not just want to tear down his plots: Instead, he saw the potential to capitalize on the history and sentimentality of the district. As everyone across Republic City knew about Old Cranefish Town, and many throughout the four nations knew the story about the founding of Republic City with the aid of Avatar Aang, Maral believed the district had considerable brand recognition. He believed this meant that Old Cranefish Town could become the greatest tourist destination in the entire world.

In a misguided attempt to demonstrate his interest in investing in the community, Maral pushed Tai Yiang Jiang to tear down the Tai Family Noodle House for the newest Best Ramen location. Maral operated the store as its franchisor, and it ended up turning a profit. However, there was considerable backlash to the chain restaurant in the district, particularly from the elders.[1][2]

As a result of the negativity toward Best Ramen, Maral decided to use a certain level of subterfuge while making his next acquisition. He used an army of lawyers to put pressure on the Chen family to sell the Northern Springs.[2] Maral stayed anonymous throughout this process, always acting through intermediaries and corporations.[3] Just like the old Tai ramen place, the sauna was due for renovations, or even demolition. Maral tired of how long it took for anything to change in the district, and began to consider bringing in muscle from outside Republic City to put pressure on the Chen family.[2]

Personality

Maral was an energetic man who believed that nothing should stand in the way of progress.[2]
