Makittuq was a powerful waterbender from the Northern Water Tribe who lived during the era of Roku. She had a deep connection to spirits.[1]
History
Early life
From a young age, Makittuq knew she was assigned the wrong gender at birth. When her family rejected her and her need to live openly as her true identity, she found solace in interacting with spirits who understood her true self. She always felt isolated from others and was more in touch with spirits than people.[1]
Joining Avatar Roku
Makittuq first met Avatar Roku upon his arrival to a Northern Water Tribe settlement outside of Agna Qel'a seeking shelter with Gyatso from brutal conditions.[2][3] Makittuq however remained silent while the villagers explained current problems associated with Tribal Chief Tiguaa harboring resources like food and medicine from outskirt communities for profit and their primary focus of solely protecting Agna Qel'a. In addition, many illnesses fell upon the people. In particular, a recent one causing animals, even docile ones such as turtle seals, to become aggressive and attack humans. The violent impulses could even lead to death, as was Qarsoq's case. These animals were noted to be covered in purple sores.[3]
Later in the night, Makittuq came to the defense of the settlement, helping Roku and Gyatso contain an infected caribou bear attacking the village. Afterwards, Roku thanked her for saving their lives, and feeling that her flash freezing ability would be a boon to stopping infected animals, invited her to join them upon further noticing her ability to heal and needing someone with knowledge of the land. Makittuq accepted the offer.[3]
Life as a spiritbender
As the spirits became agitated, Makittuq took it upon herself to develop her rare waterbending ability to calm spirits thrown out of balance. She lived near the edge of a large spirit forest and did her best to stop dark spirits from attacking Agna Qel'a and other settlements.[1]
Physical description
Makittuq was a tall woman with a broad, warm smile.[1] She was described as having amethyst eyes and a umber face. She also had two thin V-shaped white lines tattooed on her forehead, with an additional single line of white ink running from the center of her lower lip to the bottom of her chin.[3]
Personality
Makittuq was a kind woman, though often felt isolated due to others not always respecting her true identity. She was happy for assistance from others and would teach any waterbender to heal others, regardless of gender.[1]
Abilities
Makittuq was a very powerful waterbender and had a deep connection to other spirits, which led her to develop an exceedingly rare technique to calm spirits. She also knew the conventional methods of using waterbending to heal.[1]
