Maizu Village is a small village located in the Earth Kingdom. In 99 AG, the village began to be raided by Fire Nation soldiers.[1]
History
During the Hundred Year War, a group of Earth Kingdom refugees fleeing the Fire Nation came to rest at Maizu Village. It was here that the group was infiltrated by Jianjun, a spy. She seeded a rumor among the townsfolk that a Fire Nation military battalion was on its way. As the villagers and refugees ran for safety, Jianjun slipped into the group, pretending to be a villager who had accidentally joined the wrong party.[2]
Some months before the winter of 99 AG, the village began to be raided by the Fire Nation. All of the village's earthbenders were captured, and the settlement was left defenseless and vulnerable to further attacks from the Fire Nation.[1]
Later, the Fire Nation began to set the wooden houses alight, and extorted the villagers. When Chio told the soldiers that her family had no money, she was told that her father would be put to work instead. However, Katara arrived on the scene, having heard the young girl scream for help. She used waterbending to knock the Fire Nation soldiers aside and extinguish the burning houses. Katara was thanked by Zenko, and he invited to dine with his family that night.[1]
Zenko's husband told Team Avatar that they had brought hope to the village that they could stand against the Fire Lord. That night, Katara showed appreciation for Chio's origami. They discussed that hope and staying optimistic was necessary in the fight against the Fire Nation, and Chio was inspired and gained a new confidence. As Team Avatar departed on Appa, Chio's fathers gave Team Avatar a basket of dumplings, and she gave Katara a paper crane as a sign of luck.[1]
