It is one of just a handful of traditional families that dominates the area. The Lis hold most of the district's wealth and power, and are well known even to outsiders as a symbol of Old Cranefish Town.[1][2]

History

The Lis are the largest, oldest, wealthiest, and most powerful family in the district. They are best known as the owners of the Red Wing Opera House, but they also own many other properties in the district. Many people in Old Cranefish Town are wary of asking a Li for help, because they are aware that even a small favor from a Li comes at a cost. An exchange of favors could result in the other person buying season tickets to their Red Wing Opera House, or it could be giving them important information. Despite the reluctance many have to turn to the Lis, there is no real way to navigate the district without dealing with them, as they appear to have a hand in just about every business in the area.

The family is so populous that, unlike many families, who may have just a single elder to handle affairs, the Lis have an entire council. This institution is full of a great amount of squabbling and life-long grudges, which is worsened by many of them being life-long dramatists.

However, beneath a facade of generational wealth and power, the Lis have grappled with the pressure to sell their extensive property portfolio to developers. Various companies started to eye their properties in the district, and each company brought a higher offer to them throughout the week. The Lis tacitly agreed not to sell unless the entire family council would. The council continually refused to sell to developers, with some feeling a sense of commitment to Old Cranefish Town, while others disagreeing what offers were best and not wanting to sell too early.

However, unbeknownst to many Lis, one member of the family, Li Joon, managed to own the majority of shares in the opera house. Having bought shares off her relatives before her death, Joon would leave her shares and her fortune to her daughter, Li Yaquin. Unlike many in the district, Yaquin wanted to modernize the area, and had a desire to escape the district.[2] Few Lis had realized how much ownership Li Joon had been able to consolidate, and those who were aware believed that Yaquin would not sell, since it so thoroughly broke with family tradition. Yaquin's traditionalist uncle, Li Gong, was the only one to see what Yaquin was planning, and desperately wanted her to refuse all offers to the opera house. When his niece refused to listen to him, Gong instead proposed creating an Old Cranefish Town Preservation Association, controlling which property owners in the area could sell, and when they could do so. However, Yaquin refused to let her uncle thwart her plans, and planned to let business interests in the area know what Gong was planning so that they could dispatch their mercenaries and force Gong to give up his proposal.[3]
