Leela was a dockworker on Jasmine Island in the early 3rd century BG. Seeing some injustices in their treatment, she rallied her coworkers to unite into a collective organization which defended their interests, and was chosen as their foreperson. This unexpectedly put her in a central position when Jasmine Island was targeted by a large Fifth Nation pirate raid, as Leela led the main port's ad hoc defenses.

History

As a dockworker, Leela was often confronted by the great power of the "Three Families" โ€“ the Fu, Qi, and Jin families โ€“ which had traditionally dominated Jasmine Island by working together.[1][2] She thus resolved that for the coworkers to gain more influence, they also had to unite. Her efforts yielded results and led to a union of the dockworkers, with her being appointed their foreperson.[1]

Conversely, her tenure would not be marked by labor disputes but a great crisis.[1] In the 290s BG, a Fifth Nation splinter fleet led by Tagaka, an infamous pirate queen, attacked Jasmine Island.[3] The island's main port was among the locations targeted by the raid, and Leela led her fellow shipwrights and dockworkers to defend their work place and homes. Though brave, the port's defenders were not warriors and could not hold out without aid by the Jasmine Island protectors.[1][4] Ultimately, the Fifth Nation raid was defeated thanks to the efforts of the protectors and the aid of a small force of Fire Nationals led by Hei-Ran.[5]

Personality

Leela was not a "natural born leader", but she quickly embraced her role as a foreperson due to her strong community sense and unwavering moral code.[1]

Abilities

Though lacking a natural charisma, Leela was a talented and devoted leader for the dockworkers. She was also an earthbender who could create an earth armor in combat.[1]
