Lan's mother was a resident of Bin-Er who chose to leave the city with her son. During her journey to the Northern Air Temple, she was lost in the mountains, and her son was separated from her.[1]

History

Lan and his mother escaped the shang city of Bin-Er together, and attempted to reach the Northern Air Temple via the wagon trails. His mother was later found alone by the temple's patrols in the mountains, having already grown very sick.

The woman was brought to the hospital in the village at the base of the Northern Air Temple. Avatar Yangchen attempted to personally heal the woman with waterbending, but could not get the woman's fever to break. The Avatar repeatedly applied the water to the woman's forehead, in a manner similar to applying a damp towel, and made sure to regularly toss aside the water she had been using and draw a fresh batch from an attendant's basin.

Abbot Sonam asked Yangchen if she should move on from the patient, as the monk was unsure that the woman would be able to wake easily. However, Yangchen stayed committed to the task, and believed that the woman was close to making a turn for the better. The patient's arms and legs then suddenly started to jerk, and Yangchen ordered for a big tub to be brought to her in order to heal the woman with more water. The attendants answered that all the tubs were occupied, and the woman's shaking only became more violent, with her head starting to experience swelling.

Kavik soon arrived beside the patient, carrying a large amount of water. Yangchen assumed that he must have obtained the water from the snowmelt outside. The Avatar ordered the waterbender to surround the patient's body with it, and he successfully managed to keep a coffin-like shape of water flowing around her. The Avatar subsequently applied her healing to the water, managing to get the swelling under control within a few minutes. Yangchen then told Kavik to bend upwards, so that she could reach the patient's spine. Eventually, the woman's fever broke, causing a subtle shift in temperature to ripple across the water. Kavik then proceeded to lower the woman back to her bed.

The woman regained consciousness soon after the healing process was over. She became confused about where she was and what had happened to her. Yangchen explained that she had successfully reached the Northern Air Temple, and the woman was astonished as she realized that she was speaking to the Avatar. She gave tearful thanks to Yangchen, but then asked where her son had gone. The woman stated that she and her son had left Bin-Er together, but nobody in the room knew what had happened to the boy. The woman proceeded to reach out to Yangchen with a frantic burst of strength, clinging to the Avatar's robes to desperately asked what had happened to Lan.[1]

A search party managed to find Lan just in time. Sonam informed the Avatar about the good news when she returned to the Northern Air Temple after stopping Zongdu Henshe's plot to put the Unanimity project into action in Bin-Er. Sonam offered to take Yangchen to meet with the woman on her son, with the exhausted Avatar agreeing to do so on the following day.[2]

Lan and his mother were still residing in the village around half a year later. The woman saw Lan bump into Kavik in the street, and admonished her son for wandering off. The woman appeared to partially recognize Kavik from the hospital, but he was trying to keep a low profile in town, and denied having met her before. She tried to take a closer look at the waterbender, but he stated that he was in a hurry, and fled into the teahouse.[3]
