Kosui was a Jasmine Island protector during the 100s AG. Alongside their team, they became entangled in Jasmine Island's political crisis of the time, investigating a major theft and the activities of Xai Bau, the eventual founder of the Red Lotus. Kosui was also a member of the Climbing Vines, a communitarian faction on the island.
History
Kosui's family tended to a small temple in Jasmine Island's interior, with the location doubling as home. In the firebender's childhood, the temple was attacked and burned down by Fire Nation soldiers during "The Devastation", Admiral Yueya's brutal yet unsuccessful invasion of the island. Despite these experiences, Kosui remained an upbeat and optimistic person growing up.[1][2] Believing that all people ultimately had good inside them, the firebender eventually joined the Climbing Vines, as this party advocated compromise as well as unity among the islanders.[1] The Climbing Vines were one of several factions which emerged on Jasmine Island in the 100s AG, taking a moderate stance compared to other political groups of the time.[3][4]
Kosui also became part of the Jasmine Island protectors, the island's security forces and main law enforcement agency.[1] The firebender became quite popular among both the Climbing Vines and protectors due to their positive attitude, even overcoming the distrust of some comrades who disliked firebenders ever since "The Devastation".[1] Meanwhile, the infighting among the political factions further escalated into a full crisis when new elections for Jasmine Island's ruling council were announced.[3][4]
The disputes on Jasmine Island continued to worsen when missions of the Air Acolytes as well as the Order of the White Lotus, including Iroh and Piandao, arrived on the island. The order members were seeking Xai Bau, a renegade revolutionary who had allegedly become active on Jasmine Island.[3][5] Kosui's team, including Ganzaya, Kim Jin, Thaki, and Zo, was present to greet these arrivals.[5] Once the protectors had escorted the foreigners to the council hall, they learned that someone had stolen a bag of golden jasmine seeds from the yearly harvest, a symbolically potent and disruptive action.[5][6]
The protectors' leader, Wei, ordered Kosui's team to investigate the theft, reasoning that the group included members of various political factions and thus might be reasonably neutral.[2][6] The group thus visited the headquarters of the Autumn Leaves, Climbing Vines, Antiquarians, and Risen Wave, questioning and seeking clues.[6][6] The group eventually uncovered the thief's identity,[2][nb 1] and the influence of Xai Bau on the Autumn Leaves faction.[7] Furthermore, the investigation directly impacted the upcoming elections of the Jasmine Island council.[8]
Personality
Kosui was a compassionate, joyful, and generally optimistic person who saw good in all others. They were somewhat infamous for their bad puns which were often suited to disarming tense moments. Kosui's positive attitude made them popular among others. They were also very loyal, and would never leave allies behind.[1][2]
Abilities
A competent firebender, Kosui produced especially bright flames which could disorientate opponents.[1]
