Karuko was a factory supervisor in Republic City's Green Meadows district. Believing that most factory owners wanted what was best for their workers, Karuko became a union buster who freelanced for multiple factories on their time off.[1]

History

Karuko's parents worked in the Green Meadows district. When they snuck into the factory to see their parents work, they were injured when a pile of poorly secured metal poles fell on top of them. Rather than leave Karuko's parents with nothing, the elderly factory owner paid for the child's entire recovery, stating that it was the least he could do.

Since their childhood, Karuko had to walk with a hinged metal brace on their left knee. Due to their prized metalbending abilities, Karuko landed a well-paid job as a factory supervisor. During their time off, they also freelanced for multiple factories as a union buster. They convinced disgruntled workers that unionists were simply refusing to pull their weight, and that they were working against the greater good.

However, with the growth of the Green Meadows Union in the district, the factories hinted that Karuko should have taken more aggressive measures in keeping would-be unionists in line.[1] One factory owner, Lee Jun, called on Karuko to break a Green Meadows union protest she was facing. Jun lied to Karuko, telling them that the unionists were planning on something dangerous and needed to be stopped by any means necessary. In light of this, Karuko became ready to do whatever they needed in order to support Jun, even if that meant violent force.[2]

Personality

Due to a factory owner helping Karuko in the past, they believed that most factory owners wanted what was best for their workers and for the city. This innate sense of loyalty to the owners made them a natural union buster. In spite of this, Karuko never relished in the idea of hurting another person, and found that the choices they had to make were more tough to make with the factory owners calling for a harsher approach against unionists.[1]

Abilities

Karuko used their metalbending to smooth the steps they take with their metal brace, hiding their pain. Their prized bending abilities landed them one of the better paid jobs in the city's industrial district.[1]
