Personal life

Johane Matte was born in 1971[1] in Amos, Quebec, Canada.[2] She attended Algonquin College from 1989 to 1991[2] and enrolled in Graphic Design during her first year, but switched to Television Animation when the college announced it was offering that course in the following year.[3]

Career

Matte learned more about television animation over the years, working in different studios with talented colleagues. She currently resides in Burbank, California.[4]

  • 2013: Won an Annie Award for Rise of the Guardians (Storyboarding in an Animated Feature Production)

Trivia

  • Matte has various online accounts under the username "rufftoon".
    • While working full-time on the original series,[5] Matte created a fan-comic under this username titled Zhao of the Water Tribe, which is updated periodically on her DeviantArt.
  • Her favorite Avatar characters are General Iroh and Admiral Zhao.[4]
  • Matte has published blogs critical of The Last Airbender film, especially on the portrayal of Zhao in the movie,[6] the dreadlocks hairstyle for Iroh,[7] and how firebenders require a source to bend fire.[8]
  • Matte was torn in deciding whether to work on The Legend of Korra television series and the Rise of the Guardians film, but ultimately chose the latter.[9] She would later join the production crew as a storyboard artist on the series from the show's second season onward.
