History

Jiyung was born on Karr Lok Island of the Fire Nation. She attended the island's school, Sunray Academy, where she made three friends: Adaki, Aera, and Sujun.[1] At school, Jiyung was a decent student and loved math classes, but tended to get extremely nervous under pressure. This regularly impacted her academic performance; once, she got so nervous during a math exam that she suddenly started to loudly sing the Fire Nation national anthem until being taken out of the room by the teachers. Though those present actually expressed approval of this patriotic display and applauded her, Jiyung was left deeply embarrassed.[2]

One day during one of their meditation classes at Sunray Academy, Jiyung realized that Adaki had fallen asleep next to her and woke him up. After class, she, Aera, and Sujun expressed concern for their tired friend. The group's talk was interrupted by another student who declared that a fight between students was taking place at one of the school's training rooms.[1]

Jiyung was shocked when Adaki volunteered his group for the tournament.

Once Jiyung and her friends arrived at the training room, they witnessed a group of sixteen-year-old students easily defeating a group of six graders. Jiyung commented that the older students clearly had an age advantage in regard to their firebending power, yet also demonstrated highly trained skill. After the match, the students were surprised when Chuan, the top firebending teacher of their school, appeared on the stage to declare that they were still seeking fifth graders for a youth team to enter the regional bending tournament. She offered to train any fifth graders who enlisted, despite her students usually being fourteen at the youngest. Much to Jiyung's horror, Adaki suddenly declared that he and his friends would sign up.[1]

Afterward they went to math class, and Jiyung used the opportunity to calculate their winning chances in the regional bending tournament. During the next lunch break, she desperately told Adaki that they had little chance of succeeding, not to mention her own tendency to crack under pressure.[2]
