Jiang was a young student at the literature academy in Ba Sing Se's Middle Ring.
History
When Xuan was tasked with staffing his mother's apothecary to fill in for a sick employee, Jiang and Rende waited for him near the entrance, intending to go see a show later in the evening. They watched as Jin requested her package but was unable to pay and began to tease her, suggesting that Xuan give her the package anyways in exchange for a kiss.[2]
A few weeks later, Jiang, Rende, and Xuan ran into Jin at the academy. Needing a fourth person for their team for the Grand Showcase and knowing Jin's skill in calligraphy, Jiang pressured Xuan into asking her to join. When she refused, Rende tried to convince her, but Jiang decided they were wasting their time, assessing that she had no chance of making it to Ba Sing Se University anyways. Jin took offense to this, calling the trio snobs and stating she did not want to go to the University anyways.
The insult further fueled Jiang's anger, and he became combative with Jin, insulting her for being a refugee, her lack of friends, and shoving her against the wall. When Jin was wounded by his words, Jiang smirked and prepared to shove her again, but he was pulled away by Rende. As he left, he insulted her one last time, telling her to find where she belongs and to stay there. Furious, Jin lifted a rock to throw at him, but was stopped by Xuan, leading Jiang to assume she was simply not powerful enough to lift it.[1]
That evening or the next day, Rende and Xuan confronted Jiang over his thoughts on refugees. Previously unaware of his beliefs, they dropped him as a friend, preferring the possibility of maybe recruiting Jin over having him in their team.[3]
About a week later, Jiang ran into Jin in the hallways of the academy, giving her a dirty look.[4] Some time later, he had been fully ousted from Xuan's circle, simply glowering at them from a distance.[5]
Physical description
Jiang was described as being shorter than Rende.[2]
Personality
Jiang was a very combative person, freely throwing out insults and getting easily offended when insulted himself. He viewed refugees very poorly, considering them lesser than Middle Ring residents like himself,[1] a view considered extreme even by other Middle Ring denizens, enough so for them to stop associating with him entirely.[3]
Relatives
Jiang's father worked at the Ministry of Culture. Xuan stated that if something happened to him, his father would use his power to punish those involved.[3]
