Jia was a leading member of the Antiquarians, a political faction on Jasmine Island during the 100s AG. Based on her own experiences during the Hundred Year War and a study of the past, she firmly believed that foreign powers posed a constant threat to her homeland, resulting in her becoming a radical proponent for increased military preparations and defensive efforts.

History

A native of Jasmine Island, Jia was still a child when the Fire Nation military invaded her homeland and caused large-scale destruction. Her apartment building was set on fire during the fighting, but it was saved by her cousin Thaki's waterbending.[2] Afterward, Jia became Thaki's ward until she was old enough to care for herself.[2][3]

By Jia's young adulthood, the Hundred Year War had ended, but Jasmine Island became subject to a political crisis. As a new election was scheduled, various factions began to bitterly feud over their homeland's future direction.[4] Jia joined one group, the isolationist and highly traditionalist Antiquarians.[1][5] She quickly became an avid reader of the group's extensive library, focusing on wartime literature. These books alongside the Antiquarians' beliefs caused Jia to become increasingly militant in her worldview, seeing outsiders as a constant threat. She came to the conclusion that Jasmine Island had to prepare itself for armed conflict with other powers, further radicalizing her. Jia called on her party leader Yan to support the bolstering of Jasmine Island's defenses,[1] though the Antiquarians were actually critical of the Jasmine Island protectors' power.[5][6] Over time, she became a prominent figure within the Antiquarians.[1]

Eventually, tensions on Jasmine Island further escalated when someone stole a bag of golden jasmine seeds from the yearly harvest, a symbolically potent and disruptive action.[4] The protectors quickly started to investigate the crime, seeing the Antiquarians as potential suspects.[7] A team of protectors, including Jia's cousin Thaki alongside Ganzaya, Kim Jin, Kosui, and Zo,[3] visited the Antiquarians' headquarters which was located in a museum. Upon their arrival, Jia offered them a tour, using the opportunity to talk about the threat posed by the Fire Nation and the Earth Kingdom. She also voiced suspicions about foreign agents being responsible for the theft.[7]

Personality

Consumed by her party's ideas and the writings of wartime authors, Jia became a martial person who regarded even peaceful politics as a game of "strategy and positioning", describing diplomatic missions as "incursions" or "reconnaissance".[1]
