Hue Li was a farmer on Jasmine Island in the early 3rd century BG. Over time, he rose to become the spokesperson for all the different food producers on the island, and thus served as their de facto leader during a large Fifth Nation pirate raid.
History
Historically, Jasmine Island's most powerful and rich people were involved in the production of golden jasmine tea, leaving the local fishers and food farmers to occupy a secondary economic role.[1][2] As a crop farmer himself, Hue Li resented this situation somewhat. Regardless, he was mostly known for his earnest and likeable nature, and thus gradually gained the trust of other farmers and fishers. Eventually, he was made the spokesperson for Jasmine Island's food producers, defending their interests in various situations.[1] In this position, he often clashed with Jasmine Island's ruling council, as it favored the "Three Families" – the Fu, Qi, and Jin families – which had traditionally dominated Jasmine Island's tea production.[2][3]
In the 290s BG, a Fifth Nation splinter fleet led by Tagaka, an infamous pirate queen, attacked Jasmine Island.[4] Though the local food producers were generally ready to defend their homes,[5] Hue Li was unwilling to risk any of his fellow farmers and fishers in the defense of the island's tea plants and jasmine groves. As the Jasmine Island protectors organized the anti-pirate defenses, the spokesperson was thus only willing to offer them some limited support.[1] Ultimately, the Fifth Nation raid was defeated thanks to the efforts of the protectors and the aid of a small force of Fire Nationals led by Hei-Ran.[6]
Personality
Hue Li was a generally good-natured and likeable person, but was greatly frustrated and often angered over the way Jasmine Island's leaders and elites favored those involved in the tea trade over the food producers.[1][3]
