Goro was a Fire Army officer who, alongside his brother Juro, served on the Mo Ce Sea prison rig in the late Hundred Year War. Though not a firebender, Goro was a highly capable fighter using a guan dao. Brash and aggressive, he was eager to test his mettle against the Fire Nation's enemies.

History

Goro was the younger sibling and generally too volatile and impatient for interpersonal and political issues. As a result, Juro usually handled these on his behalf.[3][2] The two brothers were extremely close and looked out to keep each other safe. According to Juro, there was a "long story" behind the circumstances of how he and Goro became officers in the military.[1] At one point, they served in a colony and developed a good relationship with the local captain. Goro was greatly upset when they were transferred to prison duty, officially complaining that a prison was "no place for warriors of our prowess". Juro suspected that his brother's anger was actually more about no longer working with the captain.[4]

Goro and Juro worked as security officers on the Mo Ce Sea prison rig.

After being assigned to serve on the prison rig, Goro earned a reputation as a brutal though effective guard.[3][1] In late 99 AG, Goro and the other guards were put on alert by the warden due to suspicious activity across the rig. Juro discovered the source of the problems, Avatar Aang, as he was patrolling the prison's factory section. The soldier immediately insulted him out as an "elephant rat" and challenged him to a duel. The two fought, and Goro was defeated, vowing that this was not the end. As he fled, Goro accidentally dropped his key.

Later, Goro and Juro rediscovered Aang at the factory's central vent. When Juro started to engage the airbender in small talk, Goro angrily interrupted them, demanding action. Though the two brothers were a formidable fighting team, they could not defeat Aang. In the clash, Goro was hit hard and fell unconscious. Juro immediately stopped opposing Aang to aid his brother, allowing the airbender to continue his mission.

Soon after, a major prison revolt took place, resulting in a mass breakout. After reorganizing into a militia on the mainland, the ex-prisoners returned to take out the prison rig for good. Just like his brother, Goro was part of the warden's garrison which defended the prison's upper levels from the insurgents. Eventually, the rebels were reinforced by Boqin's Earth Kingdom Army unit and broke through the upper levels' defenses. As they attempted to break into the rig's armory, Goro intervened to assist the soldiers who had been holed up there. Despite his firm belief that two earthbending "prison rats" could not defeat them, Tyro and Haru did just that.

Sometime later, the prison's warden rallied his last remaining forces to defend himself. Goro was part of this last defensive line. As they fought, Tyro pointed out that the Avatar had returned in the form of Aang, but both Goro as well as Juro expressed disbelief in this claim due to Aang being seemingly far too young. Ultimately, they were defeated by Tyro's rebels.[1]

Personality

Goro was brash, aggressive, confident, and boisterous. Hotheaded, he often stormed into battle without proper preparation and relished combat. He regularly mocked and insulted his opponents, and appeared cruel to those around him, though he greatly cared about Juro.[1][3] Goro relied on his brother Juro to navigate his interpersonal relationships.[2]

Abilities

Despite his impatient nature, Goro was a very capable warrior when wielding a guan dao. He also skillfully integrated his volatile tendencies into his combat moves to strike harder and faster.[1][2][5] In contrast, he had poor skills in interpersonal communication and politics.[3]
