Gai served as captain of the Avatar's security force until year 17 of the era of Yangchen, when she dismissed him from his post for disobeying her orders not to harm Kavik.[1]

History

During Yangchen's visit to Bin-Er as part of her official tour of the shang cities, Gai and his security detail were responsible for keeping her safe while she resided at the Blue Manse. The job required them to patrol the building perimeters, apprehend intruders, and respond to the Avatar's summons. Accordingly, they immediately came to Yangchen's aid when she caught Kavik intruding in her quarters searching for information to steal. A brief scuffle ensued, during which Kavik managed to fight off several of the guards and nearly escape before Yangchen pulled him back into the heart of the Blue Manse with airbending. Now adequately restrained, Yangchen ordered Gai and his men to detain Kavik in the basement, where she would speak with him shortly, twice commanding them not to hurt him.[2]

However, upon retreating with Kavik to the basement, Gai proceeded to beat and berate him mercilessly in defiance of Yangchen's instructions, only letting up when he realized the Avatar was approaching. He made sure his men pulled the waterbender upright before her arrival, but Yangchen promptly fired him and the rest of his unit after noticing blood trickling from the corner of Kavik's mouth. Caught off guard by the sudden termination, Gai sought to clarify what Yangchen meant, causing her to remind him of her directive not to hurt Kavik and explain that he and his men would no longer be eligible for employment in her retinue. Unable to formulate a response, they wilted under her words and, at the Avatar's command, shuffled out of the basement to report their indiscretions to Boma.[1]

Though Yangchen never outright regretted discharging Gai, when Boma subsequently took a blow to the head from a jug thrown by an angry mob while they were en route to a shang meeting in Bin-Er, she blamed herself, lamenting that her security would have been tighter had she not fired him.[3]

Physical description

Gai was a grown man of considerable strength, able to deliver repeated blows to Kavik with ease, who noted that, besides his boots, he wore clothing with red, green, and blue trimming to symbolize his multinational affiliation.[1]

Personality

Gai appeared to hold strong convictions about the sanctity of the Avatar's position, reacting aggressively to Kavik's perceived disrespect despite being instructed not to injure him. In spite of this inclination for violence, he held enough deference for the Avatar's authority to acquiesce when she relieved him of his duties.[1]
