Anatomy
The fire ferret has long, soft, reddish-brown fur on most of its body and dark red-brown fur on its short legs. It has a light face with tear markings and robust cranial-dental features.[2][3]
The light face has white badges similar to those of the red panda, but it is possible that each individual can have distinctive markings. Its roundish head has medium-sized upright ears and a black nose and its long bushy tail has alternating red transverse black rings, though the end of the tail is solid black.[2][3]
Behavior
Wild fire ferrets are intelligent, very curious, mischievous, and independent-minded animals who mainly feed on nuts and fruits on trees. Though they may gather in packs, they often live solitarily and do not recognize anyone as a leader.[3][4][5]
Once tamed, fire ferrets are docile and friendly pets who may even be obedient and loyal to their owners, as exhibited by Pabu. Regardless, tamed fire ferrets remain extremely curious and have a high need for exploration which may cause an owner great stress.[2][5] The fire ferret can also be trained to do certain stunts, as demonstrated by Pabu's circus acts.[2]
Connection
The fire ferret is a derivation of a red panda, sometimes referred to as "fire fox", in size, fur patterns, and coloration in the face, body, and most distinctly the tail. It has most of the features of the red panda combined with the elongated body of a black-footed ferret.[6]
Trivia
- The pro-bending team consisting of Korra, Mako, and Bolin was called the Fire Ferrets.[7] Bolin's fire ferret, Pabu, served as the team mascot.[8]
- Fire ferrets are sometimes used as food for pythonacondas.[9]
