Fai Lan was the leader of the Burning Ember Gang by the late Hundred Year War.

History

Fai Lan was born to "Ma", the infamous leader of the Burning Ember Gang, a criminal outfit which dominated Fire Nation Capital's Harbor City during the Great War. When his mother stepped down from her position, control over the gang passed to Fai Lan.^[1] Unlike his mother, he was no firebender and thus had to rely on terror to keep control of the crime group.^[2]

By bribing the Domestic Forces and crushing all potential rivals, Fai Lan was able to maintain and expand the Burning Ember Gang's influence. By 95 AG, he was even planning to expand into the upper-class Hari Bulkan, home to the Fire Nation Royal Family and the Fire Nation government.^[2]

Personality

Fai Lan usually posed as a mysterious and quiet figure, hiding his extreme brutality and temper unless provoked. Forced to compete with benders for power, he had to rely on his force of personality to keep his followers in line;^[2] accordingly, only his second-in-command, Kila, was regarded to be as tough as him. He respected Kila for her ability to stand up to him.^[3] However, Fai Lan was determined to deal swiftly and viciously with anyone who outright questioned his authority.^[2]

Despite his brutality, Fai Lan was also an intelligent leader who managed his criminal realm well and planned ahead for the future. His gang respected him, and he put great importance in providing protection to all those loyal to him. Nevertheless, his aid was always tied to some kind of demand.^[2]

Despite being a nonbender, Fai Lan was a strong and vicious fighter, skilled in chi-blocking.^[2]
