They notably threatened Kyoshi Island in late 99 AG.
History
In the winter of 99 AG, Kyoshi Island was raided by Prince Zuko and his forces, who were searching for Avatar Aang. Much of Suki's village was burnt in the attack, leaving it vulnerable.[1] In the aftermath, Suki convinced many of the Kyoshi Warriors to leave the village with her so they could fight against the Fire Nation in the Hundred Year War.[2]
During this time, the Black Koi Pirates linked up with a group of thugs at Koi Harbor, the chief port on Kyoshi Island, beginning to steal goods and smuggling them. Suki and the Kyoshi Warriors heard of increasing criminal activity before they left, and they enlisted the aid of a group of adventurers to help them investigate. The adventurers found the symbol of a black koi fish at the harbor, and Suki and the adventurers came across a band of pirates. After the pirates surrendered, one of them revealed they were operating from a secret hideout, tucked away in a cave along the edge of Koi Bay.
Suki returned to the beach of her village, and fought several bands of pirates with the help of the adventurers as she continued to Corsair Cove. Along the way, they managed to coax more information about the hideout from the defeated pirates. When they came to Corsair Cove, Suki demanded the pirate's surrender if they wished to leave the island unharmed. While Suki and her allies pushed back the pirates, they threatened to regroup and attack, until they saw the unagi approaching the coast. The desperate pirates promised to surrender if Suki and her allies could fight off the unagi, and having no other choice, the Kyoshi Warrior and the adventurers forced the unagi to retreat. Once the unagi was gone, Suki told the pirates to leave at once, and the frightened Black Koi Pirates were practically tripping over themselves to get away.
Despite her success, Suki noted to the adventurers that the pirates were likely to return until the Kyoshi Warrior patrols were back in full swing across the island. Later, with the outsiders having earned the hard-won trust of Kyoshi Island, they were trusted to keep any returning pirates in check at Corsair Cove and at Koi Harbor.[3]
Trivia
- The pirates appeared to have a somewhat diverse makeup, with one of the pirates offering thanks to the moon and ocean spirits, suggesting a Water Tribe origin.[3]
