Production

Beginning in early 2025, there was speculation that Avatar: The Last Airbender would be an upcoming expansion for Magic: The Gathering, after several cards in the online shop for Magic: Arena featured references to the Avatar franchise.[2] The set was officially revealed on February 21, 2025, at the MagicCon preview panel in Chicago,[3] with an official announcement video posted soon after.[4]

On June 20, 2025, at MagicCon: Las Vegas, the headliner card for the set was revealed to be Avatar Aang, who can transform into Aang, Master of Elements. This reveal also confirmed that the expansion would introduce mechanics related to each of the bending arts into the game of Magic. At the 2025 San Diego Comic-Con, a promotional card for Katara titled Katara, the Fearless was given to attendees at the Nickelodeon booth. The card depicts Katara waterbending wearing her Fire Nation outfit from Book Three: Fire and includes a rainbow watermark in the design of the waterbending elemental symbol.[5] A card featuring Yue titled Yue, the Moon Spirit was also later revealed on July 27 on the Magic: The Gathering instagram page.[6]

During the WeeklyMTG livestream on August 12, further details on the expansion were revealed, including previews of new cards and details on release products. The livestream also introduced how the mechanics for each bending art would work within the game of Magic.[1]

Mechanics

The Avatar: The Last Airbender expansion introduces four new mechanics related to each bending art:[1]

  • Airbending: Exile a permanent. Its owner may cast it from exile by paying 2 rather than its mana cost.
  • Earthbending: When you earthbend X, target land you control becomes a 0/0 creature with haste and you put X +1/+1 counters on it. If that land dies or is exiled, it returns to the battlefield tapped.
  • Firebending: If a creature with firebending X attacks, its controller adds X red mana until the end of combat.
  • Waterbending: Creatures and artifacts you control can be tapped to pay 1 for the cost of a waterbend ability.

The expansion also includes the return of previous card types, including the Ally type for creatures, Lessons, Sagas depicting notable events within the Avatar story, and Shrines.[1]
