"Your aura. It burns like the sun."

β€” Ulo to Roku.[1]

An aura is a colored emanation that shows the shape of a person's spiritual energies. Only very few mortals have the ability to see auras, and many believe that being able to perceive them is lost to history.[1]

History

In ancient times, more humans were able to read auras, particularly in the Fire Islands. Fire Sages had the ability often enough that they used it to identify the Avatar by perceiving the shape of their energies. Over time, fewer people were able to read auras. It is believed this resulted from a widening of the divide between spirits and humans.[1] Instead, the Fire Sages started to find the next Avatar in the cycle by burning inscribed bones and reading the resulting fissures.[2]

After encountering two powerful spiritual entities, Avatar Roku found he could perceive auras.

By the 60s BG, claiming to possess the skill was associated with charlatans who tried to trick the naΓ―ve out of their money. Nevertheless, Chief Ulo of the Lambak clan was truly able to read auras.[1] When Avatar Roku visited his island, the young firebender started to perceive auras when two powerful spirits began to manifest in the Sacred Cave during the autumnal equinox.[3] Even after the cave's destruction, Roku was able to read auras.[4][5]

More than a century later, Ty Lee would regularly tell her friends and acquaintances that she could perceive auras.[6][7][8] Kya also claimed she could sense a change in the aura of her brother, Bumi, after Harmonic Convergence.[9]

Nature

While perceiving auras is most commonly associated with Fire Nation spirituality, the ability is not exclusive to firebenders.[1]

The color and intensity of auras can reveal much about an individual.[3] A person's aura flaring up signifies strong emotions, such as aggression, while a smooth aura usually means that someone is calm and tranquil.[3][5] Pinker auras appear to be associated with cheer and happiness.[6] Each person's aura appears to have a slightly different color. Roku's aura was sapphire, while Ulo's was amber.[3] Meanwhile, the Avatar will always have an extremely intense aura.[1]
