Animatics are a series of storyboard frames that have been timed to provide a very basic "video" of the finished animation before their final production. During the production of Avatar: The Last Airbender, several of these were created, and the pencil-drawn animatics of selected episodes were included on the DVDs.[1]
During the production of The Legend of Korra, the animatics were mostly drawn at a digital level with applications like Toon Boom Storyboard Pro, SketchUp, and Adobe After Effects,[2][3] although some were also pencil-drawn. The animatics of Book One: Air episodes were released in an e-book called The Legend of Korra: Enhanced Experience,[4] while others were released in Blu-ray special features, or years later in 2017 and 2020 on YouTube.[5][6][7][8]
Avatar: The Last Airbender

The following list contains an overview of all available animatics of Avatar: The Last Airbender. Besides their release on their respective DVDs, these videos were also released online on the official Nickelodeon Animation YouTube channel in 2020, before the channel was re-branded as Nickelodeon Cartoon Universe a year later.[8] However, there are several other episodes whose animatics can be found on the internet, such as the first two episodes of Super Deformed Shorts ("Bending Battle" and "Swamp Skii'n Throwdown"), "The Firebending Masters", and the normal animatic version rather than the pencil-animated one of Aang's battle against Ozai from "Sozin's Comet, Part 4: Avatar Aang".

The Legend of Korra
The following list contains an overview of all available animatics of The Legend of Korra. While the animatics of Book One: Air and Book Two: Spirits were showcased in their respective home releases in 2013 and 2014, as well as the interactive e-book, The Legend of Korra: Enhanced Experience, on July 2, 2013,[4] it was not until 2017 that two segments of "The Spirit of Competition" were uploaded online on the official Nick Animation YouTube channel. In 2020, animatics of several episodes of Books Two, Three, and Four, along with those of Book One, were also released online. The animatics of several Book One episodes were mostly pencil-drawn, but over time, the other episodes were digitally drawn.[7]
However, like the first series, there are several videos that were uploaded outside Nick Animation YouTube channel. In 2016, Ki Hyun Ryu uploaded a video of the animatic of ''The Spirit of Competition'' followed by a video containing animatics of "A Breath of Fresh Air", "In Harm's Way", "The Metal Clan", "Old Wounds", "Enter the Void", and "Venom of the Red Lotus", two days later, on YouTube.[9]

Differences between the animatic and the episode

- In the animatic of "Beginnings, Part 2", both the Northern and Southern spirit portals were brimming with blue spiritual energy. However, in the episode, only the energy from the Southern portal was blue, as the Northern portal was reddish-orange.
- When the two spirit portals overlapped, the arc was blue in the animatic, while it was yellow in the episode.
- The animatic of "Light in the Dark" showed Korra with her signature ponytails throughout her entire battle with the Dark Avatar. However, her hair was loose in the episode.
- In the same animatic, Bolin's earthbending pose to defend Korra's body from dark spirits was different from the one in the episode.
- The animatic of "Old Wounds" showed Guo with hair, whereas he was bald in the episode.
- In the animatic of "Enter the Void", Suyin only covered part of P'Li's head with her metal breastplate, leaving her chin bare. In the episode, P'Li's entire head got covered.
Goofs
Sozin's Comet, Part 4: Avatar Aang
- In the scene where Aang waterbent at Ozai after re-unlocking the Avatar Sate, his back injury was not visible in the animatic, while it was in the final animation.
Beginnings, Part 2
- While talking to Vaatu before their showdown, the animatic showed Wan with his spiky hairdo from before his stay with the spirits for mere seconds.
- Vaatu's red patterns on his body were not shown during the beginning scenes of his battle with Wan. They only appeared right before he fired his purple beams. However, in several scenes, his patterns were visible after Wan's temporary fusion with Raava.
- Most scenes depicted Vaatu with a yellow eye.
Trivia
- The animatic of "The Metal Clan" of the flashback scene where Lin confronted Suyin for her ties with the Terra Triad had the sisters looking exactly like they did while reuniting in the episode, although there is a time difference of 30 years between the scenes.
