It is small, but capable of producing an extremely bright and intense ball of light, allowing it to appear much larger than its actual size.[3] They are sometimes trapped by humans to be used as light sources in lanterns.[2]
History
While lost in the swamp, Aang, Katara, and Sokka set up a campfire for the night. During a discussion about their current situation, Sokka began swatting at a swamp firefly with his machete. In response, the fly emitted a brilliant light, one that almost blinded Team Avatar and briefly illuminated their surroundings, revealing it to be filled with the staring eyes of wildlife.[3]
Anatomy
Like other types of firefly, the swamp firefly possesses a pair of forewings, a narrow prothorax, and a mechanism for bioluminescence.[3] The creature can be distinguished by its ability to shine brighter than regular fireflies,[1] emitting enough light to encompass its entire body and force onlookers to briefly turn away.[3][2]
Behavior
The swamp firefly mainly uses its light to attract other members of its species. Alternatively, the light serves as a defensive mechanism, making the animal appear larger or outright blinding predators.[2]
Connection
The swamp firefly bears a strong resemblance to the real-world firefly, as certain species of adult fireflies are capable of lighting up. However, the glow of a swamp firefly is far brighter and more radiant than that of a real-world firefly.
