• Previous appearances of the cabbage merchant during Avatar: The Last Airbender are retold from his perspective in this book, including his role in "The King of Omashu", "The Waterbending Scroll", and "The Tales of Ba Sing Se".
• The book showcases the encounter of the cabbage merchant with playwright Pu-on Tim, an event first mentioned in "The Ember Island Players".
• In one scene taking place in Ba Sing Se, a turkey duck can be seen sitting peacefully on the cabbage merchant's cart. This animal is possibly Daisy, a pet that first appeared in the Avatar Legends: The Roleplaying Game Core Book.
• The opening of the Cabbage Delicacies Bistro, a restaurant first shown in The Rift Part Two, is portrayed in this book.

Character revelations

• The cabbage merchant's real name is revealed to be "Cai".
• The cabbage merchant is revealed to have been born in Gaoling to a line of cabbage farmers. Furthermore, he was married and had two children, a daughter and a son (Lau Gan-Lan).
  • Lau Gan-Lan assisted his father at the Cabbage Delicacies Bistro.
• As part of his travels, the cabbage merchant moved through the Si Wong Desert around the time of "The Library".
• After learning of Team Avatar's repeated destructive role in the cabbage merchant's life, Zuko tried to make up for his friends' actions by buying an entire cart full of cabbages from the merchant.
• It is revealed that the cabbage merchant's idea for the Cabbage Delicacies Bistro was partially inspired by a visit to the Jasmine Dragon.

Goofs

• Aang, Sokka, and Katara are portrayed in their Book One: Water outfits during scenes taking place during Book Three: Fire.

Trivia

• Unlike previous Avatar picture books, My Cabbages features a unique story.
• If Cai shared the same last name as his son Lau Gan-Lan, that would make his name "Cai Gan-Lan", a play on "gan-lan cai", the name of a vegetable dish.
  • Dante Basco jokingly called the merchant "Cai 'Cabbage' Gan-Lan" in Avatar: Braving the Elements.
