The Lost Slipper is a shadow play performed with puppets, telling the story of a poor man suffering at the hands of an evil minister.[1][2] It was relatively popular during the era of Yangchen.[1]

Plot

The story revolves around the hero, a poor man, and his antagonist, an evil and rich minister.[1][2] The plot has a bittersweet ending, as the hero dies in the streets. However, the evil minister later stumbles over the man's corpse in view of the king, humiliating himself.[1]

Trivia

  • The play was performed when Yangchen and Kavik were investigating Taku to uncover a plot relating to the Unanimity project. As part of their cover, the two watched The Lost Slipper. Kavik disliked the play, stating that it was ridiculous how it portrayed the "humiliation of the strong [as] a good enough trade for the lives of the weak". In contrast, Chaisee thought that it was "one of the few plays with any maturity and realism".[1]
    • When Yangchen and Kavik later came across another performance of The Lost Slipper in Taku, they booed the ending, causing the puppeteer to quickly adapt the play by adding a doctor reviving the hero and the minister spending his wealth to repent for his evil deeds. According to Yangchen, this version received a much more positive reaction by the audience.[2]
  • Shadow plays are a traditional form of Chinese theater, though they have also been popular in other cultures.
