Tangbo was a carver and shopkeeper who ran the Good Tidings Seals & Stamps store in the Middle Ring of Ba Sing Se. He was a low-ranking member of the business syndicate known as the "Silver Fangs", with his shop acting as a meeting point for one of its leaders, Sumi the "Judge".[1]
History
Tangbo's shop was located in Grove District, nicknamed the "academic district" due to its closeness to Ba Sing Se University.[1][2] He sold his products, most of them self-made, while allowing the Silver Fangs to use part of his shop as a meeting place. As a result, he had good contacts with the family of Doctor Jan, one of the Silver Fangs' leaders, and often met her son Xuan. Seeing the boy grow up, he nicknamed him "Little Xuan Xuan".[1]
One day in spring 100 AG, Tangbo was operating his shop and working at one of his carvings when Xuan and Jin entered to meet Sumi. After teasing Xuan for bringing a girl, he let them in to the back room to meet her.[1] As Xuan stayed behind to allow Jin a private audience with Sumi, Tangbo promptly urged Xuan to try his luck at wood carving. The young man complied, with the elderly carver giving him instructions as he tried to work on a small wood piece.[1][3] When Jin returned to the front room, Xuan dropped his attempt, whereupon Tangbo recognized that the two intended to leave. He kindly bid them goodbye, telling Xuan that he could continue his carving attempt at a later date.[3]
Physical description
By 100 AG, Tangbo was an elderly man with wiry gray hair and spectacles who lacked a few of his teeth. Jin thought that he was an "eccentric-looking" figure.[1]
Personality
Tangbo was very devoted to his craft. He had a kind and teasing side, calling Xuan "Little Xuan Xuan" even as the boy grew up and congratulating him on getting a potential girlfriend.[1] The elderly man was also eager to teach Xuan in carving.[3]
Abilities
Tangbo had great skill at carving wood and stone, capable of creating very variable seals and stamps of great quality. Furthermore, he also carved animals and mythical creatures.[1]
