History
In the late 4th century BG, an iceberg in the Northern Sea was visited by Jianzhu during his search for Avatar Kuruk's successor. However, he only found some turtle seals.[3] Centuries later, Avatar Roku fought a duel against his waterbending master Taqukaq in the Northern Sea.[4]
During Avatar Roku's life, the waters between the Northern Water Tribe and northern Earth Kingdom were embroiled in a dispute over local fishing and trade routes. Both nations engaged in minor skirmishes and militarized the waters in-between them as a show of force. This came to a head when a massive tsunami hit the northern Earth Kingdom state of Chenbao. Chenbao blamed waterbenders for sending the tsunami, while the Northern Water Tribe blamed earthbenders for creating an underwater earthquake. The sad truth was that it was simply a horrible natural disaster. Greater tragedy was prevented when Avatar Roku intervened before full-scale war could break out, supported by Air Nomads from the Northern Air Temple. The nations backed down, but their navies remained in the surrounding waters, ready to act at the first sign of threat.[5]
In the early Hundred Year War, the Fire Nation's military crossed the sea and attempted to invade the North Pole.[1][6]
In late 99 AG, Team Avatar crossed the Northern Sea on Appa before being intercepeted by Water Tribe waterbenders.[7] Soon after, Admiral Zhao's Fire Nation fleet amassed in the sea before beginning the unsuccessful Siege of the North.[8]
Description
The Northern Sea extends from the shores of the North Pole to the Earth Kingdom's northern coast. One of the most important harbor cities at its coast is Agna Qel'a, the Northern Water Tribe's capital.[1][9]
The Northern Sea harbors polar marine life, including many species of fish, squids, turtle seals,[3][10] giant sea crabs,[11] and koalaotter.[12]
