Directed by Lauren Montgomery and produced in collaboration with Nickelodeon Movies and Paramount Animation, the film was originally set to be released on January 30, 2026,[2][1] but is now scheduled for October 9, 2026.[3]

Production
Development
On June 15, 2022, Deadline reported that three animated Avatar films were in development by Avatar Studios, with the first focusing on Avatar Aang and his friends[9][10] in their young adulthood.[11]
On November 10, 2022, Variety announced that the film was scheduled for release on October 10, 2025.[12] However, Variety later reported that the film's release date had been pushed back to January 30, 2026.[13]
Casting
On November 30, 2023, Jessica Matten was confirmed to have been cast as Katara in the film via the official website of her production company, 7 Forward Entertainment.[6] On April 11, 2024, at CinemaCon, Dave Bautista, Eric Nam, Dionne Quan, and Román Zaragoza were revealed to be part of the voice cast for the film.[2] It was also confirmed that Michael Dante DiMartino, Bryan Konietzko, and Eric Coleman[2] were on board as producers alongside Latifa Ouaou and Maryann Garger.[7] It was also revealed that William Mata would be co-directing the film.[2]
On April 12, 2024, Eric Nam confirmed via Instagram that he would be the voice of Aang,[4] while the official Avatar: The Last Airbender Instagram account confirmed that Dave Bautista had been cast as the villain and Dionne Quan had been cast as Toph.[5]
On November 19, 2025, Jeremy Zuckerman revealed that he is scoring the film with full access to an orchestra, noting that the bigger budget for the film enables him to try new things he could not do on Avatar: The Last Airbender due to technological limits at the time.[14]
Animation
On October 13, 2022, it was reported that Paramount Animation and Nickelodeon Animation had enlisted Flying Bark Productions to animate the feature film. The Sydney-based studio put out a call for Australian and international artists to work on the project, which will combine traditional 2D animation with substantial CG elements.[15] On May 12, 2025, Studio Mir, the primary animation studio responsible for The Legend of Korra, announced its participation in the development of the feature film.[16] On May 16, 2025, the film's logo was revealed on social media, in addition to a new release date of October 9, 2026.[17][3]
The animation style used in the feature film combines 2D hand-drawn animated characters with 3D computer-animated environments, courtesy of Deep Canvas technology.[18][19]
Trivia
- This will be Avatar Studios' first film.
- Kat Tsai, a crew member on the film's production, likened its blending of 2D and 3D animation to Disney's Tarzan, where hand-drawn characters were supplemented with computer-generated background elements.[20]
