The High Sage at the end of the Hundred Year War almost crowned Azula.

The High Sage is a leading figure among the Fire Sages. Selected by their peers through a special process, the High Sage usually wields significant authority, resides at the High Temple in the Fire Nation Capital, and assists the Fire Nation government if the need arises.[1]

History

In ancient times, the Fire Sages were headed by the Fire Lords until one of the latter split off and established themselves as secular rulers of the Fire Nation. From then on, the Fire Sages were led by the High Sages and Great Sages.[2]

In the later years of Fire Lord Chaeryu's reign, Nyahitha was originally next in line to the position of High Sage. However, the Saowon clan tampered with the selection process, allowing the uncle of Lady Huazo to become the High Sage.[1] The latter consequently used his position to promote the Saowon's cause among the Fire Sages, supporting Chaejin during the Camellia-Peony War.[3] After the failure of the Saowon and their supporters during the conflict and the disgrace of the clan, the High Sage and the Fire Sages as a whole were seen as potential targets for scrutiny by the crown.[4]

In 95 AG, a High Sage crowned Ozai.[5] By 100 AG, a new High Sage had risen to lead the Fire Sages. When Prince Zuko was at the High Temple, he watched this High Sage enter the Dragonbone Catacombs by standing in the middle of an intricate symbol embedded in the temple courtyard and firebending into the ground. This triggered the mechanism that opened a hidden door, allowing him to descend into the catacombs.[6] After Fire Lord Ozai declared himself the Phoenix King and passed on his former title to Azula, the High Sage prepared to crown her when Zuko and Katara interrupted the ceremony. Despite Zuko's declaration that he would be the new Fire Lord, not Azula, the High Sage proceeded with crowning Azula. He halted when Zuko challenged his sister to an Agni Kai for the throne.[7]

After Zuko's victory in the duel and the subsequent end of the Hundred Year War, a new High Sage was appointed and crowned Zuko as Fire Lord.[8]

Trivia

  • The sage who crowned Zuko did not wear the distinct headgear of the High Sages, recognizable by the golden flame insignia on its top.[8] However, Shyu also wore this headgear despite being a Great Sage.[9]
