- This article is about Jin's best friend. For the metalbender, see Suyin Beifong. For other similar uses, see Wen (disambiguation).
Suyin "Susu" Wen was a teenager who worked in her family bakery in Ba Sing Se. She was the best friend of Jin.
History
Around 96 AG, Susu found Jin at the front of a long food line in Ba Sing Se on a day she had forgotten to bring her grandfather's token. When the cook told Jin to "get lost", Susu stepped in and showed a token of her own. Jin thanked Susu after she was given another serving of rice porridge. However, Susu told her to quickly leave the line, as she had given the cook a fake token, and was buying time until the woman realized.
The Wens quickly came to treat Jin like one of their own, helping her and Gong-gong get set up in the city. Susu regularly got Jin to run errands for Wen's Bakery. One afternoon, Susu and Jin were prepping moon peaches together when Mama Wen told them about an order that night at the Pao Family Tea House. Susu eagerly left the kitchen with Jin as they made their deliveries in the wealthier part of the Lower Ring.[1] They met up again in an alley, where Susu joked about her admirers. She also got Jin to blush by hinting that she could be interested in a new, younger server at Pao's. Jin said goodbye to Susu so she could visit Hu Yuan Apothecary.[5]
Later that night, Susu went to visit Jin in her apartment, and the two girls snuck onto the roof of the building to enjoy some leftover pastries. They discussed their dreams of living in the Middle or Upper Rings, imagining what their lives could be like if they were wealthier.[6]
A few days later, the Wens learned that Suyin's father had put up the bakery as collateral so he had more money to gamble. Unable to make his money back, Official Xiang came to collect, and the family nearly lost the bakery; however, through the Judge's mediation, Xiang agreed to take Suyin as a servant girl instead, to pay off the loan her father had accrued. Out of options, Suyin agreed to the deal, leaving her family in Jin's care.[7]
Upon arriving in the Upper Ring, Suyin was brought to Lake Laogai as a candidate to become a Joo Dee. While in the cell where the candidates were kept, she shared her rations with another girl.[8] She was eventually selected by the Dai Li and brainwashed into becoming a Joo Dee, forgetting her past and beginning work as a "Cultural Ambassador". One day while working as an Ambassador, Suyin ran into Jin at Ba Sing Se University while Jin was making a delivery for the Silver Fangs to Professor Om. Jin tried to speak to her but Suyin did not remember her, Jin assuming she was acting so as not to expose Jin's illegal entry into the Upper Ring, leaving her alone.[2]
Sometime much later, while taking the monorail, Suyin ran into Jin again, who questioned why she was still acting when there was nobody else around. When Suyin tried to explain that she had never met her, Smellerbee and Longshot, who were accompanying Jin, realized she had been brainwashed like Jet, and pulled Jin away to explain what had happened. Confused at the interaction, Suyin simply left at her stop on the monorail, returning to her normal duties.[9]
After the fall of the Earth King and Ba Sing Se falling under Fire Nation control, the Joo Dees were promoted to "Supreme Bureaucratic Administrators", puppet leaders under the Fire Nation. This included Suyin, who became one of the Joo Dees used at public appearances.[4] With the Joo Dees' new rank, Inspector Heng concluded that rebels would threaten their lives, so Suyin and two of her compatriots were placed in a dedicated room with guards posted. On the Day of Black Sun, Jin and Xuan snuck into the Joo Dees' quarters in an attempt to rescue Suyin, falling for Heng's trap and getting arrested. During their attempt, Suyin was bound and gagged by Jin, but she was freed by one of her guards.[10] Suyin watched as Heng asked the intruders their intentions, hearing Jin's claim that she was coming to save her.[11]
Suyin thought back to Jin's claim and, suspicious over it, she eventually went down to the palace dungeons to talk to her. She asked Jin what she meant, as Heng had claimed that they were attempting to assassinate the Joo Dees, and listened as Jin told her about their past and the brainwashing. While she reacted to the name of her sister, Suyin refused to believe Jin's tale, writing it off as "just a story". As Suyin prepared to leave, Jin asked her to bring down roast duck and egg tarts if she wavered, noting that it was one of their favorite dishes, one they had promised to share if they ever made it to the Upper Ring.[12]
A few days later, Suyin returned to the dungeon, bringing what Jin had asked. The two girls ate together as Jin told her stories about their time together, and as Suyin bit into the egg tart, she felt her memories returning. She began to cry, and told Jin that she could remember her family and her past, though the memories were jumbled and fragmented.[13] With her memories returning, Jin tried to fill in the gaps, and warned her of the Dai Li.[14]
By the next time Suyin visited the dungeon, Jin and Xuan had met with an informant, and were planning an escape. Jin warned Suyin that the Dai Li used to return the Joo Dees to Lake Laogai to "refresh" their brainwashing, and Suyin realized that they had since moved that process to a spa in the Upper Ring, noting that she was supposed to have an appointment there the next week and would therefore lose her memories again. Over the following days, Suyin repeatedly returned to the dungeon to tell Jin and Xuan what she learned while working as a Joo Dee, making sure to act as obedient as possible so the Dai Li do not speed up her recalibration.[15]
Eventually, Jin and Xuan's escape plan was put into action, and they rushed into the Administrators' rooms to retrieve Suyin. However, they found her held captive by another Joo Dee, who did not want to leave and did not want Suyin's escape to jeopardize her new, comfortable life. While Suyin was held at knife-point, Jin and Xuan were able to knock the other girl unconscious, freeing Suyin[16] and allowing the trio to escape into an old tunnel out of the palace, now used by the Order of the White Lotus. Finally, they made their way back to Wen's Bakery, where Suyin reunited with her family.[3]
Over the following weeks, the Order of the White Lotus prepared to retake Ba Sing Se, and Suyin helped spread the word by sneaking messages into Wen's Bakery's pastries.[17] When the day of Sozin's Comet arrived, Suyin and her family remained in the bakery, boarded up with stone by Jin to ensure their safety.[18]
A week later, Ba Sing Se had returned to Earth Kingdom control after Fire Lord Zuko's ascension. Suyin, Jin, and Xuan bid their goodbyes to Smellerbee and Longshot, who were leaving to Gaipan to try to reunite with the former Freedom Fighters. As the Wen family was invited to a celebratory party by the Council, Suyin, Jin, and Xuan prepared to go, able to finally return to their normal lives.[19]
Physical description
Susu looked like she was always smiling because of the ways her eyes lifted.[5]
Personality
Susu was charismatic and witty. She had a mischievous side, and was able to scam a stern-faced cook with a fake token to get Jin the bowl of rice porridge she needed.[1] Being lesbian,[19][5] Susu was not romantically interested in boys, but joked with Jin that she still liked having male admirers who were intrigued by her style. She enjoyed light-hearted teasing of both her friends and "admirers" about their crushes.[5]
Susu did not like working in the kitchens, and was much more eager than Jin to take up any chance she could get to leave the bakery. She could get exasperated with her family's jokes about her, and rolled her eyes when her mother made a comment about her being "responsible for all her gray hairs". She also had a big appetite, and complained about her grandmother concealing that there was an egg tart left in the bakery after Susu had eaten three the previous day.[1]
