Mung[2] was a general in the Fire Nation army and the ruthless overseer of a factory built on the shores of the Jang Hui River. A firebending master, he was a cold man who believed that military needs always outweighed those of civilians. He held great contempt for the villagers of Jang Hui and often ordered his soldiers to steal their food and medicine, referring to it as a "patriotic donation". The general took great pride in being part of the Fire Nation's war effort and hoped to serve on the front lines in the Earth Kingdom.[2]

History

Mung operated a factory that was polluting the water of the Jang Hui River, thus condemning the river village of Jang Hui to decay. Following the destruction of the factory by Katara, masquerading as the Painted Lady, and Avatar Aang, he falsely blamed the villagers, as well as accusing them of stealing medicine and food supplies. Angered by the loss of the factory, he and his soldiers began to demolish the village, setting fire to the houses and knocking them into the water. However, before they could finish their destruction, they were confronted by Katara in her Painted Lady disguise. Though Mung ordered his frightened forces to stand their ground, Katara's display of waterbending together with Aang's airbending caused the soldiers to flee, leaving the general by himself. Mung firebent at the "spirit" but his attack missed, before a well aimed airbending blast from Aang threw him into the polluted water. As he floundered in the water, Katara rose in front of him imposingly, warning the general and his forces to leave the village and never return. Mung quickly clambered aboard a nearby jet ski and left with the rest of his soldiers.[1]

Trivia

  • General Mung had a large scar which extended from one side of his face to the other and went directly through the bridge of his nose. This scar showed that the Fire Nation used metal staples to help their soldiers heal.
  • He was the second boss in the Avatar: The Last Airbender – Into the Inferno video game.
