Jianjun was a Fire Army soldier and spy who worked for General Uyanga during the late Hundred Year War. Out of loyalty to her commander and a desire for revenge, she infiltrated a group of refugees in order to track an Earth Kingdom rebel group led by Haoran. This quest eventually led Jianjun to the ruined Western Air Temple where the insurgents and refugees sought safety, only for the spy to organize a trap and alarm the Fire Nation military.
History
Early life and hunt for Haoran's rebels
Jianjun was a Fire National, but spent a substantial part of her youth in the Earth Kingdom. As a result, she had an innate understanding of many Earth Kingdom traditions. After reaching adulthood, she enlisted in the Fire Army and was accepted into the personal guard of General Uyanga,[1] head of the Fire Nation military's northern forces.[2] As a result of her duties, she spent much time with her superior's family and became the protector of Uyanga's young son. Seeing him grow up and growing close to him, Jianjun began to regard the boy as a surrogate son.[1]
Her life greatly changed when Haoran's insurgents attacked Uyanga's estate, partially collapsing it. Jianjun was at the side of Uyanga's son at the time of the attack, and the two were trapped under rubble together. Whereas the soldier was left emotionally scarred, the boy was heavily injured.[1][3] When Uyanga subsequently declared her intention to hunt and destroy Haoran's rebels at all costs, Jianjun volunteered to aid this mission to avenge her ward's suffering.[1]
As a result of her skills at manipulation, Jianjun was sent out as a spy to find the insurgents. She soon managed to discover that the militants had linked up with a group of refugees at Maizu Village. There, Jianjun spread the rumor that a Fire Nation attack was imminent, causing a panic as the civilians ran for safety. Amid this chaos, the spy joined the refugees' ranks and began traveling with them as well as Haoran's rebels. Leaving coded messages behind, she allowed Uyanga's troops to trail them. The general chased the mixed Earth Kingdom group over the next month.[3] Though she gradually realized that endangering the refugees during this hunt was morally questionable, Jianjun continued to do her duty until the refugees and rebels sought safety at the abandoned Western Air Temple.[1][3]
Showdown at the Western Air Temple
Once at the air temple, Jianjun began to sabotage various exits, seeking to hinder the movement of the Earth Kingdom rebels and refugees as well as give Uyanga's troops more time to arrive.[3][4] Most importantly, she managed to destroy an elevator and tunnel which presented the easiest entryways into the structure through explosives. Yet her activities were noticed by a refugee, Woong, and an insurgent, Xinyan; to distract them, she blamed the explosions on the activities of a local spirit named Tien.[4] Afterward, Jianjun prepared to also burn the Mushroom Bridge and another exit tunnel, completely trapping the refugees and rebels before signaling Uyanga to begin an attack.[3][4] She also tried to encourage the Earth Kingdom citizens to stay at the Western Air Temple during discussions which followed the explosions.[5]
Her acts earned the spy the enmity of Tien who began to play pranks on her to hinder the sabotage actions; Jianjun used these incidents to convince the Earth Kingdom natives of the spirit's hostile nature.[4] However, a group of refugees consisting of Rei, Kyung, Yuka, Si Nong, and Minh also began investigating the sabotage, endangering Jianjun's plan.[3][6][nb 1]
Personality
Having served in Uyanga's guard for a long time, Jianjun was deeply devoted to her superior's family. Accordingly, she was driven to avenge the attack on the general's son, feeling guilty at having failed to protect him. To achieve her goal at destroying Haoran's insurgents, Jianjun was willing to lie, cheat, and deceive others at a large scale. Yet she also felt compassion for the refugees with whom she was traveling, gradually seeing them as innocents who should not be involved in the hunt for the rebels.[1][3]
Abilities
Jianjun was a capable firebender, though not an exceptional fighter.[1][8] In contrast, she excelled as a spy, understanding both Fire Nation and Earth Kingdom customs and displaying great skill at manipulating others.[1]
