C. Yee chronicling the early life of Avatar Kyoshi. Picking up about a year after the events of The Rise of Kyoshi,[1] the book follows Kyoshi as she attempts to keep peace across the four nations, confronting a mysterious threat from the Spirit World.

The hardcover edition was released on July 21, 2020.[2] A box set including both Kyoshi novels was released on October 19, 2021.[3] The paperback edition was released on October 15, 2024.[4] An ultimate collector's edition including both The Shadow of Kyoshi and its prequel The Rise of Kyoshi in one book was released on October 7, 2025.[5]

Overview

Kyoshi's place as the true Avatar has finally been cementedโ€”but at a heavy cost. With her mentors gone, Kyoshi voyages across the Four Nations, struggling to keep the peace. But while her reputation grows, a mysterious threat emerges from the Spirit World. To stop it, Kyoshi, Rangi, and their reluctant allies must join forces before the Four Nations are destroyed irreparably. This thrilling follow-up continues Kyoshi's journey from a girl of humble origins to the merciless pursuer of justice still feared and admired centuries after becoming the Avatar.[2]

Chapters

Audiobook

In addition to a physical copy of the book, an audiobook from Blackstone Publishing narrated by Nancy Wu was released digitally on Audible.[6]

The cover of the cut chapter booklet included in the Box Set of the two novels.
  • Every pose or stance that's given a proper name in the book is from the Hung Gar style of Kung Fu, which was also the main influence for earthbending in the show.[7]
  • Copies of the book from Barnes & Noble were mistakenly sold a week before the official release date in some areas.
  • Exclusive editions of the book were made available by Barnes & Noble[8] and Indigo,[9] which contain six additional illustrations from Jung Shan Chang with commentary by F. C. Yee under a section titled "Collector's Art".
  • At one point during the development of the book, F. C. Yee attempted to determine how many Fire Lord portraits there would be before Sozin if Kyoshi were to visit the Fire Nation Royal Palace as a teenager.[10]
  • A chapter cut from The Shadow of Kyoshi during its development was included as booklet in the Box Set of The Rise of Kyoshi and The Shadow of Kyoshi (released in October 2021). The booklet also included commentary by F.C. Yee illustrating his thought process during writing.[11]
    • The chapter would have been set after "The Message" and overlapped with "Resignation"; it featured Kyoshi trying to defuse tensions on Shuhon Island. She would have participated in a traditional Fire Nation game, attempting to win it in order to prevent the other contestants, the Keohso and Saowon clans, from descending into violence.[11]
    • The chapter was scrapped and replaced by Resignation after Yee, Michael Dante DiMartino, and other editors concluded that it was slowing the book's pace, lacked a proper connection to the main story, and was overall unnecessary. However, parts of it were recycled in other sections of The Shadow of Kyoshi.[11]
    • In the cut chapter, Yee had intended to put a scene that linked Kyoshi's dust-stepping technique to Suki's head-running technique from "The Boiling Rock, Part 2", showing that the skill is an evolution of dust-stepping.[12]
  • The ultimate collectors edition of the book will include features such as a cloth slipcase with foil stamping, die-cuts in front and back of slipcase revealing art underneath, stained edges, and a satin ribbon bookmark.[5]
